After the couple of threads discussing ticks I think I'm just gonna start soaking my clothes myself. I can get it our local farm supply store. I know that @va3pinner has made comments that he does this and I've done some reading about recommending ratios for dilution but I was curious as the recommendations and experience of my backpacking friends here. I'm gonna get this done before my summer/fall hikes.

Yep. It's what I've done for years. Got some stuff from Home Depot and thinned out per instruction in this forum at the time. I spray only my outermost layers. It can be really tough to do after waterproofing so I personally recommend waterproofing after doing your Permethrin soak. Never had a tick since I started doing this every spring.

and thinned out per instruction in this forum at the time. So you're saying that if I go do a more thorough search I'll find the recommended dilution ratios? Maybe I should have done that first.

I mix it to about 0.5%, soak the clothes for an hour or so, wring them hard (wearing good, long, tough, rubber gloves), hang them to dry for 2-3 days, then wash anything that has more smell than I like.

I only spray my pants, and only up to about crotch level, and then let them dry overnight. I've been doing this for about three years. So far I've not had a tick, while most of my friends have. I also spray my shoes.

I went to find these guy's site and found that the current prices seem pretty high: www.insectshield.com/But then I wondered how long self applied permethrin lasts and found this: sawyer.com/products/permethrin-insect-repellent-treatment/Maybe the cost of getting essentially permanent protection is better than having to do it over and over every few weeks. I have been just spraying myself and my clothes with picaridan whenever I head out to tick territory. Keeping the permethrin current is work.

Maybe the cost of getting essentially permanent protection is better than having to do it over and over every few weeks. That was my conclusion when I looked into it a while ago, but Insect Shield warns that they'll probably shrink your clothes, and I don't want to risk that...it's hard enough to find tall sizes that fit without shrinking them.

Keep in mind that permethrin is very toxic to cats and aquatic animals. I've heard it's only toxic to cats in liquid form but I keep my cats away from it and any clothes treated with it, even after dried.

If i remember right the ratio is 20 to 1 mix, I tried the soak of clothes but hated the strong smell of pesticide, I now just spray down my legs before I go out.

If i remember right the ratio is 20 to 1 mix, ... That may be about right depending on the strength of the concentrate you start with, but the final ratio should be more like 200 to 1.
20 to 1 is about right when starting with a 10% concentrate.

yeah that mix might be too high, but the smell does dissipate after several days. Works though, Central VA is the home of all ticks.

Permethrin is great; it was my go to spray when I lived the Ozarks for six years. However, I only used it to spray the bottoms of my pants and boots. After several years only my boots. But several years down the road, since I am sensitive to chemicals, I quit using it. I simply hated the scent as it could trigger a sinus headache.

DR
