Patagonia has stores in some surprising places. I thought they would have picked Philly over Pittsburgh. Patagonia has an outlet store in the middle of nowhere—-Dillon, Montana. Dillon is a small town with a very small state university. It has no other outlet stores or outlet malls along the interstate near town. It’s not even close to Montana’s bigger cities. Not sure why they chose Dillon, but I heard Yvon Chouinard like to fish near the area. Not sure if that’s true, but the area around Dillon has some great rivers for fishing.
So, if you had the chance to pick a city/town where Patagonia should open up a new store, where would you choose? And why?
I’d pick Coeur d ‘Alene, ID. It’s a beautiful city near plenty of mountains, rivers and federal land. A fast-growing area near several ski destinations, and it’s right off the interstate. Plenty of upscale shoppers in the area. Plus, Spokane, Washington’s second biggest city, is just a 40-minute drive away. Plenty of outdoor types in Spokane.
Regards,
DR

Another town I could see having a Patagonia store is Bend, Oregon. Beautiful downtown, scenic setting, lots of tourists, ski resort, excellent whitewater kayaking, mt biking, hiking and camping. High desert beauty.

I’m trying to understand the appeal of a Patagonia store? Granted, I have a bunch of their stuff going back to the Great Pacific Iron Works of the 1970’s, but these days a lot of their stuff is what I’d classify as “lifestyle” clothing. Some great, most marginal.

Plenty of upscale shoppers in the area. A critical consideration, I suspect.

Some great, most marginal. I would say sense of community. Pre-Covid, my local Patagonia store would sponsor films, author talks, environmental projects and the like. I thoroughly enjoyed the films and authors at the events I attended. It was nice to enjoy such programs. I’m hoping they return in the near future. Regards, DR

I think Yvon is still driving an old pickup around the valley. Gotta be a billionaire by now. I think there was a Sierra Trading Post Store in Dillon but guess it gone. Dillon is on the route from JAckson to Kalispell.
Patagonia sells a lot of stuff through Skinny Skis, Moosely Mountaineering, Teton Mountaineering, and JH High Country Outfitters here.

It has no other outlet stores or outlet malls along the interstate near town. There's something to be said about not having any nearby competition...

Patagonia has a store in Santa Monica, a beach burb on the western beach of Los Angeles that seems to go with more of their “surf” wear but also other Patagonia sports too. There’s more general retail stores in well heeled communities like San Francisco, north of San Diego, and South Lake Tahoe (“Heavenly” ski themed mall). The latter I bet gets more “ski” merch in winter. There’s an outlet in nearby Reno but that may be for a number of reasons … more general population/visitors with more median income, etc.. attracting potential customers away from the casinos for a bit. Not sure if the new high tech crowd will cause it’s prices to raise? …. Patagonia has an outlet store in the middle of nowhere—-Dillon, Montana. So, if you had the chance to pick a city/town where Patagonia should open up a new store, where would you choose? And why?… It’s probably the fishing and perhaps the outlet looking at the attracting last minute apparel/equipment shoppers? I’d say they should put a store in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area.

I can see that I suppose.
As to Dillon, it’s a nice little town in fly fishing country. Good backpacking and hiking too. Yes, Chouinard like to fish.

Bastrop. Definitely Bastrop. I've heard of a state park nearby. .. Been to the Texas Bastrop area. There’s also a far rendering plant that gives off a sickly smell especially in summer. I’m going to say Patagonia would take a hard pass. Iirc there’s Patagonia store in nearby Austin (or there was). Same long trip I also hit the Patagonia store in Chicago. Think these were more generalist disposable income type stores.

Iirc there’s Patagonia store in nearby Austin (or there was). Still there, at least it was prior to the pandemic, which is how long it's been since I made it to downtown Austin. Hard to imagine a better place for a Patagonia store.
