So this past spring has been kind of interesting on the trail cams I set up on our favorite winter snowshoe route ... lots of wolves, black bears and moose. I'm actually surprised at the number of wolves we've been getting. Fair amount of grizzly activity also. The two big highlights so far this spring were a lynx, and rather bizarre timing on one of the grizzly videos. Here's a link to the lynx video: LynxWith the grizzly ... we have a video that ended at 2:50:20 pm. We were actually walking to this trail cam during this exact time, and were only about 200 meters away. The second video started at 2:52:23 pm (2 minutes and 3 seconds later), and in between those times we exchanged a cheerful 'wait, what?!?" with him. Can't say I've ever documented one of our grizzly encounters in such a grand manner before! Grizzly in No Big HurryGrizzly in Big Hurry

WoW! those are great! That bear seemed interested in the camera itself...did you spread a little bacon grease on it as an attractant?

I love how he lumbers through that brush, delicate as a bulldozer. He/she is unstressed

Just freakinoutstnading Pete! Many thanks for sharing! I've been fortunate to see 3 Lynx, 1 in the Absaroka and 2 in Colorado's Sangres. Love this stuff! Keep it coming down the road please!

did you spread a little bacon grease on it as an attractant? Ha! I'm not really sure what's going on ... we have had a wolf, moose, deer, multiple black bears, and of course grizzlies checking out the camera up close. I imagine it's because of my scent on the camera from touching it. I tried cleaning one of the cams with windex, but a black bear came right up to it and gave it a good sniff the very next day - he didn't try to eat it though, so small victories. I think they can hear it, even though to us it's silent. That said, when I see this particular grizzly video it sure seems he's sniffing the ground and almost seems surprised when he comes up to the tree the camera is set up in. I kind of wish a lynx would walk up to it for a sniff, that would be interesting!

Keep it coming down the road please! You bet! I'll don't post a lot around here because, well ... how much can a guy talk about hiking, eh? I'll put up the more interesting stuff every month or so. Thanks for the feedback.

That's great, Pete! You can't post too much of it for me. It always impresses me how long-legged and big-footed lynx can be. Thoroughly enjoyable!

I imagine it's because of my scent on the camera from touching it. I have lost two cameras to bears. One being last summer. We had a sow with 3 cubs, those little guys would wreck havoc on everything. Sure was fun watching them grow throughout the summer though.

Thanks so much for sharing Pete. You’ve inspired me to go get a trail cam!
I watched a big boar grizzly feeding last month across the valley from where I was glassing during a dayhike. I’d love to have recorded him with a trail cam.

You’ve inspired me to go get a trail cam! It's a lot of fun for sure, and we're learning some interesting things about this snowshoe route we have. Regarding trail cams ... I bought the Browning Patriot camera. It has a trigger speed of 0.35 seconds, which was a fastest I could find in a decent price range. You can see how vital the trigger speed is with the grizzly running away from us. I originally had it set in video mode, then set it up in photo-only mode for better still pics, and now have switched back to video mode. I think I'll keep them on the video setting permanently now. The still pic quality isn't that great because the photos are very heavily processed in-camera, and the quality just doesn't cut it when I compare it to my high-end camera gear. Not a fair comparison, but doing a screen grab from video actually produces decent shots ... and video captures more behavior. I would buy two 256gb cards for each camera ... so you can switch out on the spot and bring the other card home for processing. There is room for 1500 videos on the highest quality setting with that size card, which is more than enough if you end up leaving it for a very long time. Feel free to ask questions!
