Just lock it up with a good piece of chain and move on. A long handled bolt cutter will cut through about anything you can do. Just give it a good shot for visual deterrence.

There’s an old comedy routine that’s apropós to the beater bike tactic: one guy is bemoaning his gf dumping him and he pledges to from then on only get involved with ugly women. His friend points out that ugly women may just as likely dump him to which he responded: “Sure, but who cares?”

Was in London (UK) some years ago. Passed by a bicycle that had been chained through the front wheel to a solid lampost. All that remained chained to the post was the front wheel...

But ^that’s^ totally amateur. The front wheel is intended to be an easy disconnect. It’s when the chain or ulock goes through the frame that the stakes are upped.
Unless the components are deemed valuable enough themselves to just grab it for chopping.

I know some frames and parts are special alloys. Is there any market for that metal as scrap?
I have heard stories that there are trucks in the NYC area with jaws of life unit and explosive cable cutters that drive around "freeing" bikes and filling up their truck with them.

I just checked the Kryptonite page and boy have locking systems evolved. Yep. And for the better from the point of view of the cyclist. I have a Kryptonite New York, but have never used it for its intended purpose. As a matter of fact, I never used it at all, as that purpose/philosophy changed. The hard U locks like the New York are generally the best. Nothing is perfect, but they're better than chain or cable, which can be sawed through faster. They either come with, or you can buy as an accessory, a way to mount it on your bike while riding - if you don't have another means to do so, like a backpack or pannier.
