I only needed one shirt to get through winter, and it's summer now.

She actually had a gift certificate from our son she received last Christmas. I've always liked Royal Robbns stuff myself. I'm kind of proud of her. Although not really a backpacker, she's learning. I really liked the Royal Robbins shirts that I've owned in the past, except that they've never worn very well/lasted very long. It's a bit of a mystery to me--I'm talking about strictly street-wear clothing, worn under easy conditions. I eventually just gave up on the brand.

Funny how that works. I have a pair of RR hiking pants and shorts as well as a shirt. They are my go to hiking clothes. I’ve had them for years and the are still going strong. Of course, they’re old so maybe quality control has gone downhill in recent years. This is the first purchase we’ve made from them in along time.

There's probably a huge amount of random noise and small sample-size issues at work in assessing clothing brand durability. It's not like cars, where a lot of data on reliability is collected. (Toyotas tend to be more reliable than Volkswagons, on the whole--the data are pretty irrefutable.)
I've also had poor luck with Merrell on durability, historically. But that doesn't seem to be a universal--it's probably just the quirk of my feet, and/or just random noise.

CWeston,
Royal Robbins has been sold several times since 2001. If you like RR I would recommend you check 5.11; it use to be part of RR. 5.11 is primarily for EMS, fire, police, corrections, but their shirts, pants and shorts work well for hiking. I’ve worn their gear for years.
Regards,
DR

There's apparently nothing I need right now. That's both a comfort and a bit unsettling because there's pretty much always something I'm waiting to buy on sale. I keep wondering if I've forgotten about something.

My wife and kids went to the big city (Billings, MT) yesterday, and about lunchtime I got an e-mail from REI thanking me for my purchases. Nothing for me, but my elder daughter got a Gregory Maven 55 and my younger daughter got an Osprey Aura 65. Looking forward to backpacking with them, though.

Got my Patagonia Capilene t-shirt yesterday. Crazy how much it felt like cotton. Really comfortable. Can't wait to see it handles on the trail.

I was clueless and bought my daughter an REI Magma sleeping bag a few days before the sale.... My wife gently reminded me that we had a 20% off opportunity a few days later. I called them up and they gave me the 20% credit and apologized for "the inconvenience." Well, I should think. How dare they.
My daughter tested the bag this weekend with me for a couple of frosty nights and slept like a log. My other daughter used that bag on a late-season Colorado Trail thru-hike and would marry it.

Even without a special sale REI is worth a few extra $$ for their customer service and return policy. I appreciate brick & mortar for trying things on firsthand.
