About a week ago I spent my first night in the woods in more than a year. A frost was on the grass near my tarp in the morning.

It’s nice to get out, isn’t it? Had you forgotten anything important about the process? 😄

With those temps, at least the mosquitoes weren't bothersome under the tarp.

With those temps, at least the mosquitoes weren't bothersome under the tarp. However daytime temperature was much higher. Blackflies were present and were already biting. It was too early for mosquitoes. On Crown lands several miles from a parking lot. Glad to hear. Where in the world is that picture taken? Right next to Ontario "Cottage country". Hope you had a great time. With my friend we have not seen even a single person in two days of hiking, even on a parking lot. A few more pictures from the same trip: Beaver pond with a beaver hut: Beaver dam:

Right next to Ontario "Cottage country". A couple of years ago I competed in a Ragnar race in Cottage Country. Nice area. I also remember it was late August / early September and it frosted overnight.

That beaver dam looks like it's been there a long while For a couple of centuries the main economic activity in Canada was trapping beavers and exporting beaver pelts. As a result beaver population was practically wiped out, most beaver dams without regular maintenance were destroyed and beaver ponds were drained. Then beaver pelts were suddenly out of fashion and trapping of beavers was significantly restricted. Beavers population started recovering. Beavers started building new dams. At the same time beaver population has not reached pre-European contact level. A few times I came across an apparent site of an old drained beaver pond that has not been resettled by beavers yet. Oldest beaver dams in Southern Ontario are probably 100 years old now. The dam on my photo indeed look rather old, but I can't provide any realistic estimate of its age. It's a big dam and many generations of beavers worked on its enlargement and maintenance. www.canadiangeographic.ca/article/rethinking-beaverwww.macleans.ca/news/canada/canadas-beaver-problem/
