When kayaking in fog, I use numerous techniques. One is judgement. Usually safer to just wait it out. Second, I have a pretty steady and moderate pace I can settle into and paddle, when on calm water with little wind (typical when it’s foggy). 10 minutes on heading is a half mile. 3 mph. So I watch the time to know how far I’ve gone. Third, as Zeke said, deck compass. Watch where you pack the cook kit if it’s steel. It is extremely easy to get turned around or paddle in circles without the deck compass. Worst I ever did was paddle without a deck compass, in fog, at Voyagers National Park on Kabatogama Lake. When the fog lifted I was completely turned around and heading the wrong way, and I had to swallow my pride and paddle over to a navigation buoy to get the number off the buoy and thus pinpoint my location on my map.
