Thank you and I fully agree with that except that there was nothing racist about my comment, it was simply that some did not understand what I had written. I wasn't part of that thread and *really* don't want to get into it now. I still think my comment is very apropos here. I might also suggest that you retire that gif.

retire that gif What does that mean ?
BTW, next time don't assume. That was exactly what I was objecting to. The reason why you think your comments are relevent ,in this case, is based on not knowing what I had written, well done.

back to tarptent getting sued for not providing customer service for a stolen product..... wouldn't requiring a proof of purchase just make the entire dispute null & void?

I was the one who commented publicly on Franco's comment in another thread. Franco was using an analogy, and I still think it was the wrong choice of analogies. I don't know Franco other than through his posts on here and a few related forums, and I've never felt anything else he has posted has been anything but upstanding, helpful, and open-minded.
Maybe I was too sensitive. Maybe he made a poor choice of words. Regardless, it was a one-time thing and I had forgotten about it until reading this thread. In that other thread I said, "the die is cast", by which I meant that the discussion in that thread had a certain quality that stuck to me, not that I was permanently categorizing Franco in any way.
We all make mistakes and can choose words that rub others the wrong way, even if the intention was innocent and pure. I have done it too.
Franco, I did not mean to be any part of driving you away. I welcome you back, please.

Nice JRinGeorgia. I haven't bothered to look for the thread so don't know the context, but your post above seems well meant.

It's too bad for the OP that he what he bought were incomplete stolen goods. That's just one reason to buy from the manufacturer or from authorized dealers. Impugning the reputation of Tarptent under these circumstances is wrong.

BTW, this might help to understand what I posted here. On April the 6 at BPL Randy posted a "wtb TT Moment DW " in the Gear Swap forum. When asked why he wanted to buy a few , he replied : "Lol, there are 4 tarptent moment dw rain fly’s at nps in Utah. Selling at 91$ a piece. I have contacted NPS acquisitions and security and they are not considered stolen property and it is perfectly legal to buy them from their stores and auctions.
if I get my hands on them in the next week I will need other used versions to assemble my boy scouting army of tents. (Shires will not sell me the parts to make a “usable” tent)"

"Franco was using an analogy, and I still think it was the wrong choice of analogies. " The comment was that Chinese people have the same problem telling Westerners apart as we have telling one Chinese from the other. You are still welcome to think that is racist, I don't think so.. (BTW, I explained why that is so, the difficulty in telling one from the other and that was the point of the thread).

franco , I too hope you will return to active posting, you have been a great contributor to this forum for as long as I have been here (12 years or so). I haven't read the comment in question, and don't intend to. I feel that I have gotten to know something of your character over the years, you are clearly a good person, very knowledgeable, and helpful in sharing information. You have always conducted yourself with class. One comment, whether it is is insensitive or not, is not going to change my opinion. BTW, I remember making an ill-advised comment soon after I joined this forum that was intended to be ironic, but led to me being called a homophobe by several forum-members who misunderstood my intent. As I'm sure you know, forums lend themselves well to such misunderstandings. Being labeled a homophobe really smarted, but eventually I decided to stick around. I hope you will too.

OK, thank you for that. I would prefer that members would read the comments and judge for themselves ... (Same same but different was the thread)

I've had two TarpTents, including an old Squall II I bought used through a friend, and my current favorite, the Bowfin 1S. Both have been well supported by TT and I have received only appropriate communications from them over the years.
I consider Henry a friend, having gotten to know him when he was starting out through his alma mater, Colorado College, for which I worked for many years as some of you know. It has been rewarding to see him build such an innovative and successful business. I guess this kind of BS goes along with that journey.
By the way, I only just joined the forum in December, so I think I missed the other issue that has arisen on this thread. (Not sorry.) But I have to say, one of the things I really appreciate about this group is that it does the hard work of trying to build a respectful, open-minded, forgiving culture online. That's increasingly rare, and increasingly important.

BUT I do owe the Shires family a lot, given the way I have been treated by them for well over 15 years , so here is my take on the situation. No tent is perfect---including a TarpTent. Whenever anyone posts a negative online TT review swarms of people attack that person. It's very odd. (And I'm not including the OP's post at the beginning of this thread as it IS NOT a review). Over the years I have read most of Franco's posts regarding TarpTents and I have never found one single post expressing a negative comment on the shelter. It's like there's a fawning acceptance of all things TarpTent---see Franco's above quote---He owes them alot. But the reality is no tent is perfect---every model has its faults and weaknesses if used long enough in all weather conditions. I use Hilleberg tents exclusively and have made exhaustive comments on each model's weaknesses---no point in listing them here. I guess I'm able to do this without bias because I have never and do not currently work for Hilleberg. There's also Gear Discrimination---and it works with tents too---as in: This brand has no faults!!!

It's like there's a fawning acceptance of all things TarpTent---see Franco's above quote---He owes them alot. He works for the company. Would you expect him to badmouth the company he works for? The OP did his first post claiming Tarptent was racist in regard to their customer service. Yes, each shelter has it's weaknesses and strengths. We aren't discussing the quality of Tarptent vs. Hilleberg. The OP's complaint was in regard to bias against Australians with customer service. Can you please help me understand how your ability to point out weaknesses in Hilleberg has to do with bias against Australians or Franco's view of the situation?
