I posted this over at bpl, but thought a few here might be interested, especially that connoisseur of all things stove and pot related, Gabby!
Seems my brain goes in spurts of interest – lately it’s been stoves, pots and mugs. I got an MSR Pocket Rocket DLX a couple years ago and, while I like it, I haven’t found it especially wind-worthy. Certainly better than those stoves with completely exposed burners, but I wondered about additional wind protection. Years back I made a windscreen for a Snow Peak Giga Stove from a Snow Peak Ti bowl. It worked great, so I copied the original idea, but this time with a Ti plate from Amazon for $12.99. It’s an “iBasingo Titanium Pan Dish Plate” size Medium. 5-7/8″ x 1-1/8″. Seemed about right size wise. After modifications it weighs 1.83 oz. The PR DLX design really lends itself to a design like this. The modified plate sits securely on the fold-out legs. It’s super stable. The 3-support pattern is not universal (ie the supports will only fit in their original slots – hence the directional arrow on the bottom). I traced the stove onto a piece of paper, cut it out for a pattern and transferred it to the plate bottom. A bit of judicious and careful Dremel work with some sanding was all that was needed. Obviously some controlled testing is in order to determine its actual efficacy, but it seems like a workable design:

I like it - and the conception, design and execution are great. I have to admit that I bought 2 SP ti bowls some time ago to try much the same thing, but never got a "round tuit". I have been using the bowls, however. :^)
Just looking at the Amazon page to which you linked, I'm thinking a size "small" bowl would be better for narrower, taller pots like the SP/Toaks/whatever 700ml.

I find the deluxe inherently wind resistant but that sure looks like a great upgrade to counter those types biggest (imho) vulnerability.
ETA: Also good timing as I saw canisters are back on the REI shelves.

Thanks for the kind words Gabby. Yes, regarding the small plate I contemplated that. The outside diameter of the PR Dlx’s pot supports are 4.80”, while the outside diameter of the “small bowl” is 4.45”. It’s certainly not a big deal cutting the three pot supports out past the outside edge of the plate, but it does limit its usefulness, relegating it to relatively small diameter pots. I think for safety I’d like around 3/8” space around the pot on all sides, so given that admittedly arbitrary requirement, the pot would have to be limited to a diameter of 3.75” (which is exactly the diameter of my Snow Peak Solo Ti pot). Of course you’ve now inspired me, and I’ll likely get one and hack it up Deeper in the minutiae, my only complaint about the Amazon plates are they’re a bit heavier than I’d like. The Snow Peak Ti Bowl weighs the same as the medium Amazon plate in its modified condition. I may cut down (height) a Snow Peak Ti Bowl, and cut it out for the stove. If I could get a +/- 1 ounce Ti windscreen I’d be pretty pleased.

I really like that bradmacmt. And I have to know: What Dremel bit/wheel/accessory did you use to cut the slots and circle?

Nice job, bradmacmt! How about a pic of your pot sitting atop that rig? Also, how do you carry the windscreen -- does it nest somehow?

I really like that bradmacmt. And I have to know: What Dremel bit/wheel/accessory did you use to cut the slots and circle? Dave, I used very small cutoff wheels to cut the center out. You go in small, incremental cuts around the circle, just punching through the other side and moving to the next cut. You'll burn through a couple of those wheels to get it done. I finished it with a grinding wheel, rat-tail file and emery. On the longer pot support slots I used a larger cutoff wheel. As you know the Dremel tool has ruined more stuff than it has helped create... it's a wicked little tool! It requires a lot of deliberate action to control it. The tendency when cutting the long slots is for the large wheel to catch and get into a space you don't want it, so a lot of deliberate control and attention is required to make it behave!

I'm really slow. Going back to look at the beginning of Coolkat's "Canister Stove Replacement" thread, I finally saw your previous post about your "old" SP ti bowl windscreen. I feel somewhat stupid about this, because I had that post in the back of my mind, but had forgotten where, and by whom, it was posted. DUH. I remember thinking, "I was going to do this, but I never did make time." when I saw it. Old people go in circles because they can't remember where they've been or where they're going - or why they were there or why they were going somewhere else." :^)

bradmacmt, that is a thing of beauty! I have made a windscreen of sorts for mine out of a disposable aluminum-foil pie tin, but it needs work. Maybe I’ll make that my project for May when I can’t go much of anywhere.

I plan on modifying a Snow Peak Ti Bowl as my next project, and will probably do a small plate per Gabby's recommendation.
