One of my favorite students just told me that she's taking a teaching job in Rangely, CO. She and her boyfriend are outdoorsy types, so that should be a great location for them: 2-3 hours to Moab, the Uintas, the Raggeds & Maroon Bells, etc.
Anyone have more specialized local knowledge of that area of NW Colo? I'd love to be able to give her a few suggestions of places that might be a little closer to Rangely that non-locals wouldn't necessarily know about.
Thanks.

I taught music in Rangely for 3 years before moving to Gunnison.
The pay was good - there were oil wells pumping within site of my apartment building. I've heard that Chevron has scaled back its operations since. But, the facilities are nice there.
As far as hiking, there is nothing really close, except for exploring the sage country on the edges of town. The closest real trails are the 3 in Dinosaur National Monument about a half hour away. Nothing there for backpacking, though. During the hiking season on weekends, I alternated between the Uintas in Utah to the west, and the Flattops Wilderness above Meeker to the east. That was a great area, that I would recommend she explore. Trailheads for both Uintas and Flattops were close to 2 hours away. On occasion, I'd do a trip to the Grand Mesa, Colorado National Monument or Rattlesnake Canyon near Grand Junction, or possibly Moab. If I had a 3-day weekend or longer, I might make an excursion to some place 4 hours away like the Wasatch Range near Salt Lake City, or the Maroon Bells area.

Ha! That's great. I remember you telling me about your time there, but I didn't remember the name of the town.
