Frankly I don’t care about their staffing challenges (my expectation as to why the campground shortage), they’ve had a year. The park has gotten lazy.
Disappointing.

Related...Do not know anything about any Tuolumne Meadows plans as they (NPS and ARAMARK) have not told us anything about whether the TM store will even open or not. We did put in our bids for our past positions (the Aramark way to staff)...and thankfully was awarded my previous post at the store (was notified back in October) but that's all we have been told us so far.
Regarding "staffing challanges"...one major problem is housing. We, of the store staff as well as most NPS staff, live 2 to a tent (some right behind the store, some in bug camp, others at the stables...all in the general area) and due to Covid they want to limit this to one person only in a tent...thus not enough staff then to man the store/grill/post office, as well as the needed camp workers, visiters center workers, etc without working a six-day work week or driving up 50+ miles. The same is at the lodge...lots of crew are needed to make it all work but not enough housing if...maybe if all get their vaccines first?
Regarding "lazy"...We never signed on for a 6 day/ 60 hour work week. Stay tuned. mark

By "lazy" I was referring to park management who have had a lot of notice their staffing requirements would be challenging to meet. And the restroom crew for Porcupine etc. consisted of two people driving around in a pickup truck.. while oversight was a campground host. Trash a contractor from outside the park. Legions fewer people than Tuolumne Meadows requires.
Well perhaps they'll revise this as the realities of a vaccinated workforce become clearer.

I think that the Tuolumne Campground will be occupied at about 1/2 capacity. As far as is known now. No first come/first served sites will be available, unless YPS changes their minds. They were not included in reservable sites eother.
Yosemite was rather sneaky by opening sites in Lower Pines and North Pines to be reserved on February 15. Although I was on recreation.gov to try to reserve Upper Pines, I did not see the small notice that the other campgrounds were available too.

hikerchick395 Yes, while it’s not a favorite I’m expecting to look into a Tuolumne Meadows campground reservation as an alternate to my White Wolf lodge schedule in the event Aramark shifts it’s plans. Arriving from pretty much sea level I like a bit of acclimation by wandering around up there before heading out wherever. I might even chance a Rafferty Crerk permit reservation as it’s been about two decades since I’ve been out that way. Bernice Lake and that side of the range could use another visit. ETA: well it’s on to Plan B as I just got called Aramark is not opening either White Wolf or Tuolumne Meadows Lodge this season. Phoo. markskor Have you heard further word on the store/grill/PO?

High Sierra Fan I think that this year will be the best in Tuolumne since it will probably run at 60% of capacity. Too bad that it is a dry year.

That’s a good point as my main gripe about the big TM campground is its far too crowded: which won’t be the case this year, you’re right. I’ve got other reservations lined up so I can take my chance on the TM recreation dot gov free for all and if I am successful it will be fine, if not then I’ve got backups. Fingers crossed they open the Grill. For some odd reason I really like that place.

I’ve got a WP permit entry for September 6, a TM campground reservation for the three days between (12-15) trips then another WP out from GP for a Clark Range loop over to Lyell headwaters of the Merced. All following a week at the Wawona the last of Aug to Sept 6 since they canceled White Wolf Lodge out from under me so I went big in compensation 😎. and I’ve never spent any time down that way. . This is the most calendared Yosemite visit I’ve ever done. But with no fcfs campgrounds it seemed the way to go. See yah! John
