Now that we got 2020 behind us, I figured we should start the Fitness Updates thread again. For those unfamiliar with these running threads... feel free to post your own updates, questions, etc.
For Lent this year, I'm doing a modified paleo diet. Generally I've been doing good. Oddly, I find 8:00-10:00 PM is the time I have cravings.
I've been running once a week, 6-8 miles on hilly roads. Sometimes I'll squeeze in a second 3-6 mile run. I ski every weekend. I've been prioritizing moguls and glades, so it is truly a workout. While watching basketball games, I'll do one burpee for every point. I've done 5,000 burpees in the past 3 months.
Late last year / early this year I cleaned out and organized our basement. I now have access to my weight bench once again. I just have to find a way to incorporate it into my weekly exercise routine.
I'm receiving my first vaccine later this week. So hopefully I'll be able to resume P90X/Insanity workouts with my neighbor in mid-April.

I continue to do burpees during basketball games. I've done nearly 900 in the first 7 days of this month. They really helped with the soreness/stiffness related to my COVID shot.
I'm in a weird place right now where I'm itching to do some trail running, but have no desire whatsoever to run in cold weather anymore. Maybe the warm weather this week will kick-start some motivation.
Weight is down another pound (about 4 pounds for the year). But I'm also in another weird place where I have ab muscles starting to show, but my big fat love handles persist.
No skiing this past weekend. I packed our skis in the rooftop carrier, then proceeded to place the key in the pocket of my (non-skiing) jacket... which I left at home... over an hour away. I was so angry with myself.

I took advantage of the spring-like weather and got a couple of trail runs in. More burpees on the off days (avg of ~160/day), along with some stretching.
I'm getting used to the new diet. Not nearly as many cravings.
Weight remained steady.

Typically I'm able to run on trails sometime during the winter (snowmobile trails, thaws, etc.), but not this year. I've been crushing it on the roads though, even hills. This week I started running on some technical trails. What a difference between the roads and the trails! My ankles are actually sore... like a muscle-type sore after a workout.
I'm really getting accustomed to the diet. Still have a few cravings. Down another pound.

I took Deep Blue, my restored Bianchi, out for her first post-rehabilitation ride yesterday, after finally procuring the desired components and related doohickeys. Well, almost. I did resort to my local shop for one last item, namely the cable from the rear chainstay to the rear derailleur - seems as though things have changed in 30 years, and modern cables/ferrules don't fit my old fashioned bike. Harumph! I wasn't going to spend hours searching for the wrong part and berating myself when it arrived and didn't work, so I turned them loose. Steel is real. It was only an hour after work, but good times. I plan to ride again tomorrow after work. I lost a couple of pounds the last week or two, so that's also headed in the right direction.

I've been riding my bike to work, and taking some hillier routes back home. COLD mornings, wonderful evenings (albeit a bit windy).
Lent has ended and I made it through with relative ease (Keto/Paleo-ish diet). After "cheating" a bit on Easter, I'm back to the diet. I get bloodwork in 2 weeks to see if it has made any difference. Overall I feel better, especially in the gut bloating department.
I've been doing burpees during basketball games (1 per point), both men's and women's, taping games I can't watch live. Basically 130-160 per day for the past 2 weeks.
I need to start resistance training, but this past weekend and early this week has been spent lumberjacking (cutting, moving, stacking logs). I figure that counts as a resistance workout.
Down a couple more pounds.

Staying the course. Down another pound.
I've started doing pullups... just one set of 7-10 each evening. I've now past the initial soreness stage and will be able to quickly add more.
I've been able to ride my bike to work most days. I've also squeezed in a few trail runs. Yesterday's run averaged 200' of climbing per mile, and I rarely felt winded.
I've also started stretching more. Now a full body stretch routine every other evening while I watch TV. On the flip side, I haven't done any burpees since the NCAA finals. I still have the women's final game to watch, plus some NBA games. Time to strike a balance between the two.
I got blood drawn today to check my numbers after 8 weeks of my hybrid Paleo/Keto diet.

Boy... my posts are really boring.
It was a really disjointed week.
Down another pound.
Up to 2 sets of 10 pullups per day with no residual soreness. I'll up that 3 sets this week.
Weather prevented bike riding all but one day.
I heard my numbers for my blood work were good.
I signed up for a Spartan Race in July (Palmerton Super [10k]). Extra motivation!!!

I copied this post from the "Diabetes" thread...
If you recall from above, I went on a Keto/Paleo hybrid diet a couple months ago because although my sugar and lipid numbers were still in the "normal" range, they were on the verge of becoming "of concern". At the 8 week mark, I got bloodwork to see if the diet 1) lowered my blood glucose, and 2) raised my lipids (because the diet substitutes fat for carbs). Well, I got my bloodwork results back yesterday, and WOW!
My serum glucose had been in the high 60s to low 80s when I was a strappin' young lad. It had been in the 90s the past few years, with the occasional slight breach of 100 (102, 103, etc.). Yesterday's result... 85! My A1C was 5.5, which is normal. I never had it checked before, so there's nothing to compare to. Intuitively, it seems a little high compared to my serum glucose level. Maybe because it takes more time to change A1C?
The biggest surprise was my lipid panel. In the past, my total cholesterol had almost always been around 210-230 (borderline high), and my LDL was also borderline high. But that was offset by a good HDL number, so my T Chol / HDL ratio was always good. I figured the current numbers would be high because I have been eating more fat. And not just more fat, but the way things worked out... a higher proportion of red meat / saturated fat than I would normally eat. Boy, was I wrong. My total cholesterol was the lowest it's ever been (175), my LDL was reduced but still a bit elevated... but that was due in part to my VLDL being rock-bottom and my HDL being a bit lower than my running average (though still stout). My ratio was also the best it's ever been. Triglycerides were normal, but they've always been.
My kidney function numbers (creatinine, potassium, etc.) had also been high end of normal / borderline concern, and those numbers improved as well.
I also had a vitamin panel done and everything was good there, too.
This was all done in 8 weeks. So I'm a happy dude today, and I'll gladly continue on this diet.
PS - I also lost 8 pounds, and my blood pressure down to one of my best readings (I don't have the numbers in front of me but I believe it was 124/78). I'll be planting beets this weekend!
PPS - This prompted me to make an Excel table of the past 20 years of my results, which I should have done much earlier.

My weight loss has leveled off, but then again, I strayed from my diet a bit last week (both post bloodwork relaxation and my birthday). Back on top of it this week.
Weather hasn't been cooperative, but I got in one very hilly bike ride, and felt surprisingly well.
I wasn't able to plant my beets and other cold-weather crops since the garden is a mud pit. And it's forecast to rain all week. Ugh. I should have taken a day off of work the prior week.
I ran on the roads a couple of times and was able to hold a faster pace for longer.
I continue to see weekly improvements during stretching.

Some nice weather has finally moved in. I've been able to squeeze in some trail runs and bike rides between my daughter's softball games. I did a 10-mile trail run on Sunday in an area I hadn't been to in 20 years. It is much nicer now than it was 20 years ago.
Weight has remained stable.
I'm now up to 6 sets of 12 pullups nearly every day. Stretching continuing to improve in minute increments.
I have a touch of a pinched nerve on the left side of my tailbone (doesn't really affect me). Hopefully that works itself out in the next couple of days.

I haven't been on the bike nearly as much due to weather and after-school activities for the kids. Trail running is trending down, too. I seem to be making it up by doing more yardwork. Got the garden nearly fully planted, cleared out the last bit of the woods from deadfall and burned about half of it. I can now get the riding mower into every part of the woods to keep the undergrowth down.
I'm now doing 100 pullups per day, about 4-5 days per week.
The pinched nerve in my low back worked itself out, and I replaced it with a pinch in my right shoulder.
The diet has strayed over the past couple of weeks. Dialing it back in.

For around 17yrs, I went to the gym around 3-4 times a week. My workouts were never very extreme, my thinking being that with the somewhat lighter effort motivation wouldn't be an issue, and I would be able to keep this up...forever. The workouts were supposed to supplement my weekly hike, which was typically on the more extreme side.
So, for 17yrs I kept this up. And then, in January 2020, with reports of COVID-19 becoming ominous, I stopped. The hikes continued as normal. Once we all went into lockdown, I started to do walks around the neighborhood, plus some simple exercises like squats, pushups, and jump rope workouts for cardio.
Today, after a break of 17months, I finally went back to the gym.

Last week, I had one of the best trail runs in several months.
I've been doing burpees during hockey games (25 per goal). I'm up to sets of 25 now (originally started with sets of 10 back in football season). If the Canadiens make the finals, I'll up it to 30 per set.
Weight is down slightly.

So... it's been a long since I last posted.
In late June / early July, I got some intestinal bug that sidelined me for a couple of weeks.
On July 10, I completed a Spartan Race at Palmerton (one of the Spartan classics). Around 7 miles and 2700' of climbing, 29 obstacles. I failed miserably at the first couple of strength obstacles. Had the shakes, lightheaded, etc. Nearly quit. Got some water and gummies in me and felt MUCH better the remainder of the race. The race made me realize I need to work on weight carries (although I did OK at Palmerton) and grip strength. To that end, I've added sandbag workouts to my routine (see below). I'm contemplating building a set of monkey bars / rings.
On the 14th I'm part of a road-running relay team (of 5) covering 100 miles in New Hampshire. Not sure what legs I'm running, but the 3 marathoners on our team are gobbling up around 70 of the miles. In response, I've added longer distances to my trail running. I really should be doing more, but shorter, runs... but my schedule just doesn't allow that.
Like a true idiot, I signed up for the grand-daddy of Spartan Races... Killington. Sept 11, around 13 miles and 6,700' elevation gain, 35 obstacles.
SANDBAG WORKOUT (current... I keep adding as I improve) Two duffel bags filled with 75-lbs of sand One 5-gallon bucket filled with 50-lbs of rocks
Shoulder-carry a duffel bag up 120' foot hill (first 50' easy grade, last 70' steep). About 1/3 mile round-trip. Carry a duffel bag like a baby 50' uphill (a little over 1/10th mile), drop it, then run back down Baby-carry the second duffel bag, drop it, run back down Front-carry the bucket up the 120' hill and back down Run up to the duffel bags Farmers carry the bags back down Run up and down the 120' hill In total, just shy of 2 miles and 500' elevation gain
