i basically want a CF style "front office", but see that the industry now markets 'front-backpacks' in sizes much larger than required for a pair of glasses or pen & pencil. Q: anyone share a front-trunk that works for them? i like this one, but it's about 4x the volume i want. modifying something not intended would be fine zpacks.com/products/multi-pack?aff=21thanks

I have a HMG Versa which I like pretty well. It can be worn as a fanny pack or threaded onto a hipbelt or sternum strap. It have carried it on a few backpacking trips, it is especially useful when I am flyfishing. I have also carried it on dayhikes. It is expensive but very lightweight and versatile.

I bought a Zpacks multi pack as a possible solution for carrying my camera gear, and though it is big enough, I decided not to use it because of its lack of any kind of padding and I am just too lazy to devise something. It'll go on ebay here soon. Anyway -its well made, feather weight, and even though it is bigger than necessary for glasses and a pencil, I think you'll find the extra space very handy.
I ended up using a Lowe Nova camera bag for my front pack setup. Much heavier yes, but it well protects my camera setup. thing is, it too is bigger than I need. I find the extra room handy for all kinds of stuff, map, space for gloves I remove to take a picture. A snack bar, my hat when I begin to over heat, etc. I don't know why I didn't add a front pack years ago.

I use an accessory pocket that attaches to the shoulder straps and hip belt. Osprey doesn’t seem to make it anymore so I guess I’m lucky to have it. It has an extra clip that lets it be a waist-pack when detached from the backpack.

I wear fishing shirts meant for the flats. They have oversize pockets, are cool, dry quickly and wick moisture. I can carry a small camera, phone, snacks, etc..... easily with no pack needed. It's all I need to fly fish, too. I carry tippet, fly boxes, indicators, weight, all in one shirt.

Very useful carry, and just under 3 ounces! I almost pulled the trigger on the Versa a couple weeks ago but I was still contemplating the Lineloc top lid (which also converts to a lumbar pack) for my GG Blaze 60. I decided the extra 9 ounces wasn't worth it for something I would very seldom actually need. Now the question is whether having the Versa is worth $70. It comes back to actual need and the prospect of day hikes from base camp.

Many years ago I modified a fanny pack to make it into a chest pack. It's a simple diy project. Here is a webpage that describes some options similar to what I did. However, I mounted the sternum strap adjusters high on the shoulder straps so the chest pack rode higher up on my chest. It functioned well but I didn't like the fiddle factor of having to unclip the chest pack whenever I wanted to take off my backpack, so I haven't used it for a long time. Rather, I now use shoulder strap pouches/pockets. Easy to access. Big enough for smaller objects. No fiddle factor when I want to take off my pack. Here is one example. There are a number of others out there.

I’ve used a Gossamer Gear shoulder pouch for my smartphone which doubles as a camera and really basic “GPS”. An even smaller but dual zippered Rite in the Rain pouch caught my eye. At Nomads (Mt San Jacinto’s town of Idyllwild), a somewhat bigger shoulder pouch from ULA I think caught my eye too.

gotta tell ya folks, i think this is just what i need I wasn't sure what you were referring to until I saw the 2nd pic. It's called a pouch, which is a darn sight smaller than what you attempted to describe in the OP.

sometimes i don't know what i don't know. the CF office, i had a local leather guy make me one circa 1971, was just about what the picture depictures. course i could always use "more equipment", but finding a place to store it off-season often proves a botheration
