Since I would still be carrying at least one lighter and matches, a built-in igniter seems to me like just extra weight and one more thing to break.

Since I would still be carrying at least one lighter and matches, a built-in igniter seems to me like just extra weight and one more thing to break. The stove I've carried for many years has a piezo ignitor, and though it's a handy feature I agree the extra weight is unnecessary since I always have backup flame. My current kit is a GSI Dualist. I often go solo so I ditch one of the bowl sets & lid, but the pot is much larger than I need. I've been thinking about a replacement, and this thread has finally made me pull the trigger. During my search I found this thread about pots with a built-in heat exchanger, which ran from April 2019 to Feb 2020. BigLoad used the Olicamp XTS as an example. It's supposed to be about 40% more efficient in fuel usage, but some still thought the extra weight of the pot (compared to a Toaks Titanium, for example) wasn't worth it. In my view that depends on whether the improved efficiency allows you to carry one less or a smaller fuel canister. zeke offered the following sage advice, which applies to any set up: I took a long hard look at the Toaks products, but decided on the Olicamp stove/pot combo in this review. The Olicamp Kinetic Ultra Titanium stove weighs 1.7 oz and the pot (6.7 oz) is a good size for nesting. I don't cook over a campfire, so the built-in heat exchanger isn't an issue for that. Not exactly an ultralight pot compared to Toaks, but less expensive and I'm looking forward to saving on fuel. I've never been all that happy with the GSI nesting bowl set, which has an outer bowl I use for oatmeal and an inner bowl for coffee with an insulating sleeve & lid. Therefore I also ordered a GSI insulated mug that has good reviews and weighs under 4 oz. I'll probably eat my oatmeal out of the pot, unless I get crafty with a DIY insulated bowl. I hope to use my new gear next month when the the snow melts, possibly on a trip to explore waterfalls in Kentucky. Perhaps I'll post a gear review afterwards.

so there's that!
like Henry used to tell me, "you'll catch on if you live long enough"

During my search I found this thread about pots with a built-in heat exchanger, Thanks for your well thought out post! I didn't even know this was an option. I was about order a Toaks pot myself but looks like I'll be doing some reading first. As it stands I'm using the GSI soloist minus a few of the extras.

but decided on the Olicamp stove/pot combo in this review. The Olicamp Kinetic Ultra Titanium stove weighs 1.7 oz and the pot (6.7 oz) is a good size for nesting. You decided on this but have you purchased it yet? I only ask because it's out of stock on their website. Guess i'll go look at amazon. You've started me down a rabbit hole of reading and researching but the heat exchanger on that pot does appear to aid in fuel efficiency. If I could start carrying around the 4oz canisters instead of the 8oz ones it's well worth it. After 10 days in CO last year I still had plenty of fuel left in my 8oz canister so all of this is very intriguing.

I’ve had an Olicamp XTS pot for around 6 years. Was actually using it yesterday on a few stove tests. Heat exchanger pots absolutely work.

I agree with the heat exchanger pots being more efficient. My setup is a tad heavier - GSI weekend HE pot is 9.3 ounces- has the exchanger, and the lid doubles as another smaller pot. Coupled with the wind screen it really cuts down on boil time. I switch back and forth between that and my teapot. Every so often I think about a lighter setup, but I just decide to keep what I have because it works so well for me, and at this point I'm not going to sweat a couple ounces of pot weight. For what its worth, my entire kitchen is this pot set, Optimus Crux stove, GSI Outdoor Infinity mug, and a titanium bowl so I can cook more than one course, or just boil-and-bag it.

Yes. Always. Learned the hard way sucking spilled soup out of pine needles is nasty.
I used the plastic ones for years, just switched to the MSR version. Its metal, wider, and much more stable. about half an ounce heavier, but I can also use it for my Svea 123. Don't use that stove much but its been a good friend for more than 40 years!
I ignore piezo lighters. They do work, for a while anyway, and i always have a lighter and or a fire steel with me anyway.

I've also read the HE pots keep the contents warmer longer, due to the heat retained in the bottom fins. My trips are usually in cooler weather. Maybe now the morning oatmeal won't be cold before I finish eating it.

yeah and at the time I was making $1.35 an hour flipping burgers (my first job) so 10 bucks was a lot of money for a 'toy'!

I have a Pocket Rocket, which I use with a homemade windscreen made from a oven drip tray and some custom clips that help hold my pot in place. I also have a homemade super cat (alcohol). My favorite is still a small cooking fire, when allowed.
