An option I wasn't aware would work until I started planning this summer's JMT hike... Cheapest I found, if you finish Monday through Thursday you can shuttle from Whitney Portal to Lone Pine via the Lone Pine Chamber, stay the night at the Hostel, catch the morning EST to Mammoth, and then Yarts to Fresno. The Lone Pine Chamber charges $50 for the shuttle, with 10 of you they may discount the additional riders. You'll burn the better part of a day but it will get you there. Does the Mammoth timing work with YARTS or grabbing that at Lee Vining? Back when I was researching this the Lee Vining transfer worked for a single day travel schedule while Mammoth meant an overnight stay, iirc.

EST drop off at Von's in Mammoth, walk to Yarts at the Shilo is what I was thinking. Lee Vining would work out about the the same. You have 20-30 min to make a connection.

Coordinating connections always makes my head hurt. One more reason I prefer loops and lollipops over through hike end to ends. One transport can be okay but as soon as there’s a transfer: something is likely to go wrong and screw things up major.

Totally agree. I am hiking the JMT this year. Between flight connections, to bus connections, to shuttles getting to my start on time is a nail biter. I am spending an extra $400 on airfare to provide a bit of comfort margin. The reverse, coming home, if I am a day late I just call my boss and say I missed a flight. But to miss my permit date...that just can't happen.

The other solution I sometimes take is just build in extra time, for instance spend a down day in Mammoth before connecting to YARTS from ESTA. Easier when I just need to get back to my truck instead of an airplane reservation.
