cheaptentguy, is this to hike in or to sleep in? For hiking, I'd say it's definitely too heavy. Even for sleeping, I prefer something lighter. I have a 200 weight Icebreaker baselayer that I sleep in year round, in temps anywhere from 5-60 degrees. For me, this is the perfect weight. If I need more warmth, I add a thin fleece. For hiking, I rarely wear anything heavier than a 150 weight short sleeve Icebreaker tee.

It would be my cold layer for any purpose, though presumably only for camp this summer.
I think I'm hearing my answer: a light weight base layer will probably suit my purposes better. Glad I was able to see some before ordering.

For what it's worth, while I love my 250g weight merino baselayers, I rarely take them backpacking. From a layering versatility + warmth-to-weight ratio, I've settled on a 150-170g long-sleeve merino and a fleece (like an R1) combo for shoulder seasons. I normally sleep in the merino layer and wear the R1 in the evenings in camp. If temps really drop, it would be the merino base + R1 + rain jacket.
