The Sierra Cup was really only good for drinking out of a stream. Otherwise, a complete POS. I first read Fletcher’s New Complete Walker the year it came out in 1974, but didn’t own a Sierra Cup until 1977 when I did a 2.5 mos walk in the Appalachian Trail. I’ve never used it since that walk. For heating directly on a stove, get a Snowpeak Ti single wall mug...

ETA: The bottle doesn’t sound familiar. I’ve mostly gone through a series of wide mouthed nalgenes to back when they were polypropylene with ridged separate caps. Basically just large lab chemical bottles. Sigg bottles were pretty good. When I had my Svea123 stove I used a Sigg bottle for carrying the white gas. Never used them for water.

isn't there a thread devoted to old stuff? There was one not too long ago. I can't remember the thread title and after brief search can't find it. Maybe the OP can resurrect it.

For heating directly on a stove, get a Snowpeak Ti single wall mug... Remember how hot the handle on the sierra cup got?

Definitely do not boil water in a doublewall cup! I carry a Snowpeak Trek 700 on all my backpacking trips, it might work well for the purpose you describe. I use it for boiling water, drinking my coffee in the morning, and sipping whisky at night. It will hold the Pocket Rocket Deluxe and a canister, so it will make a nice compact kit. I have never had a trouble with burning my lips on this mug. The biggest drawback is that the thin single-wall titanium loses heat quickly. My wife has a GSI minimalist which would also be perfect for your purposes, but I don't know that it's made any longer.

i like the utilitarian look of that mug.
not being a drinker of spirits (7 years tomorrow!) that aspect holds no allure any longer.
but in my youth i distinctly remember trying to drink peppermint schnapps from an aluminum collapsible cup. after a sip or two, i vaguely thought something amiss. but devil be damned; i finished the cupful rather than admit defeat!

i like the utilitarian look of that mug. Utilitarian is the perfect word for it. It is one of my favorite pieces of gear for that very reason. That is great! Good for you! +1. Congratulations!

For ages I used a GSI Lexan mug but a couple of years ago my family gave me a double wall Snow Peak TI mug for Xmas. I had to order the plastic top that fits it from Japan (was Amazon but now Snow Peak site has them) but the combo will keep a cup of coffee hot and sip-able for a while. The GSI gets cold fast. Both are very tough. Also to confirm: You cannot use double wall mugs for cooking. The expansion thing is one reason. The insulating nature of them is the other.
Edit: the Snow Peak has the combo set for less than the cup on Amazon:

Years ago I picked up an insulated plastic cup on sale for a dollar. It’s light, tough and keeps liquids hot for quite a while. The only downside was a handle that protruded on the side which got in way when in my pack. I just cut them off and it’s perfect now. I see no need for the latest greatest hyped up cup. It would really have to be something to impress me.

Q: do we know anything regarding the quality & design of either "Timberbrother" or "Lixada" brands?
they're both carried x amazon and moderately priced.
thanks
