When do they open Skyline Drive at Rockfish Gap? I was by there today ( I thought I'd try to go to the Ranger station & buy a Park Pass). I followed the GPS but the gate was closed. The message on the phone said it was closed due to snow/ ice. Is it closed most of the winter?
Can you wildcat camp in the park?

It’s closed anytime snow, ice, and maybe fog make conditions dangerous. I think they sometimes close just the north or southern sections, but Skyline Drive is often closed. It’s worth a drive when it’s open and there’s fresh snow, just to see how the landscapes look in that season.

I was up on Old Rag on Sunday. You can just about see the white swath of Skyline Drive below and to the left of Hawksbill Mountain in this photo:

This time or year it is always worth giving the HQ in Luray a call. It's a really pretty place in the winter, but they do close the drive if it snows. They just don't have the manpower/equipment to keep the road open. they will reopen after its plowed. the frozen waterfalls after a good long cold snap are well worth the trip, and some of those you can access from outside the park. You won't need to use the drive at all for that.
