I think it was my comment about not being too sanguine about the fire-proofness of Western WA that was the last straw. I’m a PNW native myself, so I still find it mind-blowing that it’s an issue, and I think it’s impossible to talk about that without discussing climate change, which might not be where we want this thread to go On the up side, several people mentioned carrying saws, at least on dayhikes, to help clear trails. I deeply appreciate those who are willing to do that. I move branches where possible, but have to leave those too big to move.

Those do ignite here sometimes, and trust me, they get a lot more heated than this. (I better not stir the coals any more than this, lest I spark a real flame war.) Which is why I bit my tongue and waited to see if the "thread drift" drifted in the direction I thought it would. It didn't end up being nearly as negative as I thought it would be. I was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, get the 7 inch blade for sure for large fallen trees.

I've never felt the need to bring a saw backpacking, but a saw like this would stow nicely in my truck...I have had need to cut down deadfalls that blocked remote roads to the trailhead, in order to drive back out.
I also think the 15" with a bone blade would be very nice for hunting.
The killer for me is the price. The 21" is $105! A standard bow saw costs around $10 at Home Depot.

Some folks really love to dwell on the negative. Sure, 2020 was a bad year for fires in WA. No need to attack me. I followed the rules, and I did not start any of the fires. It takes a special group of people to create 3 pages of negativity about camp fires. SMH... Way to suck the joy out of this forum. Seems you are being overly sensitive. Fires are a controversial subject. If you have been on this forum long, you would know that. Like dogs and guns, if one starts a controversial thread, contrary discussion is to be expected. I don't see anywhere you were "attacked", just some differences of opinion on the subject.

I wonder if they make a industrial diamond chain for that. Man you could have some fun carving on rock. Ah heck, I'll just bring my battery grinder with a diamond blade in it. Gotta do something if you're bored in camp and running low on beer.

Magnus B. , there are some folks here who express themselves rather bluntly, and we are an opinionated bunch, but all good people. Like many backpackers, the majority of us are not that into camping fires, but I also think that most of us would support your doing so, as long as it is done legally and responsibly, and you seem like a responsible sort. Though there is little danger of my ever purchasing a backpacking saw, I really enjoyed your video, and got a lot not only out of the video, but also many of the replies here. This is, overall, a very informative thread, so I thank you and all who have left comments here.

I did not know I was starting an anti campfire thread. Oh that's nothing. Next time, try writing a review on lightweight handguns for bear protection, do a review on your favorite machete or, since you're into trail cooking "Pam vs Butter"

“Anti-campfire”?
Though, in fact, it wasn’t.
So there’s that.

I started a thread called "bear protection". It seemed to be a very popular post. It got 3 pages of feedback before it was taken down. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

We Mods really don’t need flame wars.
