Thanks for posting! Your second last photo in particular looks delightfully enticing.

Where is this wilderness? What state, and general area? If I get back east again, I want to check it out.

Where is this wilderness? What state, and general area? If I get back east again, I want to check it out. Garden of the Gods is southeast of Harrisburg in the far south of Illinois. It isn't a large wilderness area at all. My overnight loop can easily be done as a day hike. Shawnee National Forest has several other larger wilderness areas, but for the most part they don't have extensive trail systems. Sometime between now and the end of March I'm planning to do a longer 3 day loop from the East Trigg trailhead past Jackson Falls (a rock climbing mecca) and Jackson Hollow. I'll post a trip report here. You could easily spend a week or more hiking in Shawnee National Forest and the state parks, most of which are day hikes. The River to River trail is a linear east-west backpacking route which passes through some of the highlights and takes more than a week to traverse. I haven't done it, though I have visited many of the highlights.

Where is this wilderness? What state, and general area? If I get back east again, I want to check it out. Woody gave a good summary. I have an unofficial guide to the Shawnee based on several years of frequent visits / car camping in the years following a thru hike of the River 2 River Trail. I discovered, to my chagrin, that the R2R narrowly misses some of the best spots in the Shawnee, and so we went back and explored. There is quite a bit to see there, especially if you are willing to venture around and bushwhack / route find a bit. If you want the document, just PM me with an email address.

Woody- what model of hammock tent do you use? Do you have an underquilt?

Warbonnet Blackbird XLC, with their 20* UQ. Highly recommended. Do you lay at an diagonal angle to make it lay flat? Diagonal, and nearly flat. I bought the previous Blackbird first but the XLC is longer, and better enables my 6-foot frame to lay flat. Side sleeping works, though I almost always sleep on my back (in a tent, at home in bed, etc).

Thanks Woody!
How much does the hammock, tarp and underquilt weigh, approximately? I would guess around 4 pounds--similar to my 3 season solo Eureka backcountry tent, which is one of the bigger models.

Pretty sure my Dutchware Gear Chameleon with bugnet, 11 foot UGQ Hanger Tarp, and 30 degree Hammock Gear Incubator Underquilt weigh in the neighborhood of 3 pounds. Note that the underquilt effectively takes the place of your sleeping pad, so take this into consideration when doing your math.

More importantly, what do you see in the "Gollum Scream" rock? I think it depends on whether you see two eyes in the upper left, or a nostril and one eye in profile.
(Gollum has two eyes)
