I pulled out my beloved old (1992) Dana Designs Terraplane pack, all 7 pounds of it, and was sad to discover black granules all over it. Upon investigation, the foam back pad has deteriorated and crumbled into bits. I’m gonna try to clean up the mess and replace the foam pad with something, and see if I can make it usable again. I haven’t used it for years, it’s way too heavy and large for the way I typically pack now. This is one of two items in my downsized gear closet that I keep purely for sentiment, the other being a classic Coleman lantern from my family camping adventures as a kid. Am I the only one who keeps a few things just for the memories?

Good luck with your pack, not easy to part with a beloved piece of gear like this.
I also have an old Coleman lantern and white gas stove we used on family camping trips when I was a kid. The stove gets occasional use on car camping trips. The lantern will never get used again. Of more recent vintage is my Whisperlite Internationale, given to me as a gift in 1988. Haven't used it in about 12 years, but I'll never part with it.

I have similar: a 1988 Dana Designs Redline pack. Not as heavy as the Terraplane, but heavier than I have need of. Last check it was in great shape. Never use it, but can't bring myself to get rid of a perfectly good pack with memories.

Nope. If I find myself keeping something just for the memories, I take a picture of it and then get rid of the item. If someone else can make more memories with it all the better.

We were pretty good about giving away the old packs we never wanted to carry again. I had no sentimental attachments to my 6 lb + Dana Alpine

I too experienced this with my Terraplane and came up with the perfect solution. After cleaning all the black granules out, I cut a used Ridgerest to fit into the slot, keeping the ridges horizontal. I still use my Terraplane as I think it's the most comfortable pack I have ever used and it's absolutely bomb proof. Something that gives me great confidence when wandering offtrail.

After cleaning all the black granules out, I cut a used Ridgerest to fit into the slot, keeping the ridges horizontal I was thinking of trying something along the same line. I’m glad to hear it works for you. I kept this pack for specialty use as a load monster, like a short hike into a base camp to work on a trail crew, or hauling supplies into a cabin. I last used it for winter camping-packed it, then secured it to a plastic sled so when the terrain got too rough to pull the sled, I could just put the pack on my back, sled and all! It is the most comfortable pack I have ever had. I got a parking ticket when I bought it, due to overstaying the 2 hours while an expert pack-fitter swapped out harness parts, custom-bent the stays, etc to achieve a custom fit for me!

Had the exact same experience getting fit with the pack, minus the ticket! I know it's heavy but it's still so darn comfortable I can't give it up. Even carrying lighter loads it feels like hardly anything on my back, so I keep using it. Good luck with yours.

This is one of two items in my downsized gear closet that I keep purely for sentiment Still have my Terraplane also ... my first piece of high quality backpacking gear, so it's got 'hall of fame' status.

I replaced the crumbled pad with a piece of an old Ridgerest, and it looks usable! I will try the Terraplane on my next training hike to see how it feels!

If you cut the old Ridgerest to fill the entire section, you'll hardly even notice the difference. At least that was my experience. Good luck.

Only the owner and once-user of such old gear gives it any value---sentimental value---the next of kin will throw all of it into a dumpster because they're just not attached. Old tents, old packs, old boots, old sleeping pads---it's mostly just old junk and giveaway items.
But I still drool over my 1980 North Face BackMagic pack and my old Terraplane.
