Anyone ever tried swapping the hip belt to a pack of a different brand? I have a pack I haven’t used for years, that has an awesome hip belt that will maybe fit on a Granite Gear pack that is smaller and lighter, but has a hip belt I don’t like. Both packs have served me well and are long past any reasonable warrantee claims. In order to try it out, I simply need to sew a patch of loop-side fastener on the belt. My project for tomorrow.

Never done it, but sounds like it is worth a shot.

I'd do it. Haven't before, but in your case it certainly sounds doable.

If both have removable hip belts, what’s to stop you trying it?

Spent a while yesterday stitching fastener loop patches onto the hip belt, and installing a grommet . That hip belt is about 1/2 inch wider than the stock belt, so it’s not a completely perfect fit. However, there is an instant improvement in how the pack sits on my hip bones. I tossed a couple books into the pack for weight and it seems to work. I’ll test it out on local training hikes before seriously hitting the trail.
The catch to just swapping the belt was the different attachment systems to connect the pack and the belt. One used buckles and hook-and-loop on the inside face of the belt, the other pack has a post on the frame sheet that matches a grommet on the belt, with a wrap-around tail of the pack bag that holds all three pieces together at the base with hook-and-loop. The modifications I made shouldn’t change the hip belt attachment to its original pack.
