Just as an aside, an 8 person tent has a large footprint. Maybe look at two smaller tents? On this topic most car campground sites these days seem to be a bit standardized on a 12-15 foot by 12-15 foot platform so a tent a bit under that might be prudent. If they have a wish list of places they’d like to visit the site descriptions these days are quite detailed. My PA and NY state park campgrounds have photos of the individual sites! As do some national parks, especially the ones iirc booked through recreation dot gov. On the topic of appropriate size: the OP mentions claustrophobia adults so I’m expecting, like myself, for a car campground shelter “walking around” floor area is desired, more portable cabin and less, barely shelter from rain with sleeping bags squished together. . Hence my current 6 person I use for just myself and my previous Eureka Sunrise 10 (in these it’s a dimension not a person capacity) that was also just for me. Rainy days the extra room for a chair and table alongside the Byer cot was well worth the effort of hauling the bag that grueling fifty feet from the truck to the tent pad. m.llbean.com/llb/shop/63571?page=maine-military-camp-cot&bc=&feat=cots-SR0&csp=a&searchTerm=cots&pos=3Eureka seems to have shifted to person capacity. This is the follow on to what I have: ten feet on a side eurekacamping.johnsonoutdoors.com/sunrise-ex-6-person-tent?jo-page=2

Six would be crammed in like sardines. That statement reminds me of a tent: the (now defunct) adventure racing gear manufacturer (this term is best used very loosely), Mandatory Gear's "Puppy Pile". Mandatory Gear (www.mandatorygear.com NOTE: No longer there!), a small outfit based in Minneapolis, is a leader in the field of lightweight tent design. Indeed, the company touts its Puppy Pile tent — yes, that is the real name — as the lightest freestanding, four-season, four-person model on the market.
Weighing just 1 pound 9 ounces (including poles!), the Puppy Pile is extraordinarily feathery. But the tent, which was designed for the sport of adventure racing where a shelter is used only in emergencies, is cramped and virtually featureless.
At $499, the Puppy Pile is made of a single ply of silicone-impregnated nylon. It incorporates a simple and straightforward design with a pair of crisscrossed carbon poles threaded through rooftop fabric loops to provide structure. Its cozy dimensions — 88 × 60 inches with a 33-inch-high ceiling — will fit four grown humans, though not without some requisite spooning and cuddling. But, nevermind: this one's much, much too small for six eight (!!!) people.

It is designed for ultra-racing teams. I know. Note that the door has no backing ventilation panel (screen). The one I have does!
