Maybe my Kindle. It's somewhat fragile but I usually won't waste the weight on a burly case. Result is that I end up replacing it every other year or so. And I found out the hard way that it pretty much stops working below 32-33 degrees or so. It's not backlit, so I use up my headlamp battery too. But, well, I can't imagine being in the backcountry without something to read. The other item is my MSR Titan. It was my first titanium splurge, I'm thinking almost 20 years ago. It's a "heavy" solo pot by today's standards and I've spend stupid amounts of money shaving fractions of an ounce off of it's 4.2oz weight. But I invariably take it on every car-camping/kayak/raft trip, cause I just really like it.

jazzmom, I’ve managed to keep my Kindle safe through many trips by pairing it with my journal . So I don’t have the weight of a case, and I have my journal. But to carry both reading and writing materials does seem a bit of a luxury—right up until there’s a long wet afternoon in the tent. I love my cookpot, which is aluminum, cost just a few bucks probably 10 years ago, and weighs 6 oz for 1.8 liters, big enough to have fed the family for years. But I’m looking forward to using my new Ti teakettle on my next semi-solo trip (cooking/heating water only for myself) 🙂

Those aren't ozs I'd even consider saving. With a partner, usually not, though. I carry a deck of cards, which is invaluable on long wet afternoon *if* you're sharing a tent.

I completely forgot about my 1st gen Nook glow-light. However, I didn't take it on my 10 day CO hike. I was already pushing a heavy load and didn't want to add more. However, that was the one trip where I wish had it the most. Spent more hours in my tent because of rain than I have in a very long time.

I always carry a book when solo. Ditto, whether solo or not. One great pleasure I enjoy is curling up in my sleeping bag in my tent on a rainy night and reading.

Jazzmom’s MSR Titan kettle reminds me why I bought mine - it fits into my bearcan unlike every other cook pot I own. Once there is room in the bearcan, I fill it with other stuff so my pack volume decreases. It made sense at the time........
