After doing some work on the jeep (replaced both front axles and one hub, bypassed the heater core and burped the cooling system) I wanted to do a test drive in some remote, semi-rugged conditions. That's not hard to do in the desert. I also wanted to try out a sleeping system in the jeep for when doing future car camping while traveling. Everything worked out, though I tend to bring too many tools.

Replacing axles? I'm impressed...
Carrying too many tools seems bad until you need them.
Edit: Any pics of the sleep system?

The second and fifth photos are magical, especially the color contrasts and compliments in the last photo. Dreamy....

Edit: Any pics of the sleep system? The "sleeping system" is really nothing more than a low cot with my thermarest on top. I had to move the passenger front seat all the way forward and take out par of the passenger back seat to get the cot (6ft long) to lay flat. The biggest hassle is getting in/out. The low cot is about 6 inches off the floor. I can sit up in it which was kind of the goal.

Here is the accompanying video if anyone is interested. It's my usual 2 minute pan of the area.

Thanks for sharing. Nice pics. Too many tools? Other people have that problem?

I think if you’ve just replaced a bunch of stuff and are heading into the desert, it’s a good idea to carry too many tools.

I think if you’ve just replaced a bunch of stuff and are heading into the desert, it’s a good idea to carry too many tools. So true! But, it's something I've always done when heading out. I need to go through the carry-with tool set and get it down to one toolbox and a sack for fluids.

Car camping: Where Comfort is King.
And of course, whatever tools you don't bring, you'll need.

I think the rule of carrying tools is that however diversified they are and however many you have, there will always be an occasion in which you don't have what you need.

It looks great! I hope I'll be back in the desert by this time next year.

I'd love to be doing that right now. Thanks for sharing the magic. Never. Enough. Tools.
