Not surprised this thread still has life long after it had run its course per OP. Not here to read anything however did scroll through each page to look at photos thank you. Noticed thread has a need for more fish pic. Mature golden trout with red meat like other mature salmonids, bake fry in their own oil, IMO the most delicious flavor.

Nice davesenesac. I've tried but have never caught a golden. Have had them chase my fly but they never bit. My technique must be flawed. The only trout I have not eaten. Your photo has me salivating.

Now darn it ya'll have done it again!!!! I used to carry a nice collapsible spinning rod and gear for trout fishing in WV. Got away from it, and now I'm going to have to go up in the attic and find all that stuff. You've even gotten me thinking about actually learning to fly-fish, but I'm afraid it's going to be kinda like learning to Telemark. Once you get started, there'll be no end to the practice and the fishing trips. WHAT HAVE YOU PEOPLE DONE?

I remember my last trip with that setup, an area called Laurel Forks Wilderness in WV. Perfect place for my wife at the time who was having some physical problems that would eventually end her hiking days. It was a dry summer, very low water in usually decent size mountain streams. Made it easy to wade around looking for pools. On a side branch of one of the main streams, I found a big deep pool, almost a pond way off the trail. that thing was full of fish. Drop in a lure (I wasn't fly fishing) and get a hit. I kept two, and just let the rest go, finally just stopped because I didn't want to harass em. Seems they'd been in that pool for a while, and would strike at anything. Other times I'd catch nothing, but didn't really care. It was just nice being in/near the water on a hot summer day, and seeing all the other wildlife around.

So I went on my first Tenkara fishing trip today. I went to the East Branch of the Croton River. Legal year round fishing. Air temp around 28F. Water temp 36F. No fish. Got to test out my gear and it was relaxing and pretty. Had a brief conversation with a self described trout addict. He felt there weren't many fish if any in this section right now. The spillway was set so the river level was very low most of the winter and the trout moved to the lake downstream.

So I went on my first Tenkara fishing trip today. Glad you got out! Nice-looking water for Tenkara...the only thing you need is fish...but did you get some casting in??? I'd suspect what you describe is exactly what's going on. That's pretty cold, low water. If the fish have somewhere better to move to, they will do it. I got out with a buddy on Saturday for a 9 mi hike on a tributary of the Arkansas in southern Colorado. One of my favorite spots to be and to fish when it's not summer. Summers, it gets very hot and rattlesnakey. Water temp was 39F, air was high 40s and sunny, which feels like 50. We brought our rods, but didn't fish much. Not much open water, and where it was open, the fish were clustered in the deep pools and moving pretty slow. We did catch a few.

In this mixed flow it is also interesting how the fly/line moves under the currents and back currents. Also tested out the hip waders. So far so good. I can see where a walking stick would be good. I just took it like I do when in tricky terrain with crampons. Stay on balance, move deliberately and don't transfer to the new foot unless you are sure about it.

Anywhere near Buena Vista? Near Canon City -- high desert. BV area is pretty snowed in right now. I had a great ski up near Cottonwood Pass a couple weeks ago.

I jumped off the REALLY high Railroad trestle at Croton Resevoir about 42 years ago. It is part of the North County trailway which is now part of the Empire State trail. I know a lot of people that were around Cross River at about that time and some who did the jump. Here is a good pic with a nice " No jumping off bridge sign.

I was asked to write an article for our local Wilderness Alliance on tenkara in the wilderness. Thought I'd share here. d099eea9-21d7-4813-ad25-3645936d41a3.filesusr.com/ugd/e07d3a_6fc760fcb5f04bbeae52234cf17ada4a.pdfThe further story on how tenkara has gotten me more involved in wilderness advocacy, protection and education is that I have recently found myself on the board of this organization, have been trained as a Volunteer Wilderness Ranger for the USFS, and just his past weekend became a certified "bucker," able to lead a crew of crosscut sawyers to clear trail using crosscut saws. We yesterday cleared 23 trees from Lily Pad Lake Trail, a popular destination near Frisco, CO. It was a very satisfying day! ErnieW , any fish stories to tell?

Nice article! You do a good job of tying a lot of elements together.
I learned to fly cast at an early age, so have never really adopted Tenkara, but I understand its appeal.
I'll always remember a young woman I met in Chile. Somehow we got to talking about fishing, and she told me of the first time her grandfather took her fishing. "When that first fish hit my fly, it was an electric shock that connected me directly to the energy of the natural world!"
And so it is.

ErnieW , any fish stories to tell? Sorry only fishing stories. Not a trout yet. There is a lure only year round fishing river fairly nearby (East Branch Croton River) that I went to twice before the full NY fishing season opened (Apr 1). One of the times the air temp was 28F and the water 38F. I met a local who said he believes it is unlikely there are any trout in that section due to a number of reasons he cited. In the first week of April I did spend a day going to two different rivers but with no fish. I have waders and a fishing vest and getting out and practicing casting in real world conditions was good. I am a amateur radio guy and chat with a number of regulars on 2m who trout fish. One may have provided me with a good lead on a location to try and I am hoping to get there this week. I will post results.I hope I haven't missed the sweet spot for this season when the water is a good temp and there is some kind of hatch. But then one of the things I have realized that just getting out on a beautiful river and becoming one with the casting might be most of the fun.

But then one of the things I have realized that just getting out on a beautiful river and becoming one with the casting is most of the fun. So True. Reminds me of Thoreau's observation - "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after."
