You need to lure the neighbor’s cat into your garage and shut it in for a while :D OMG, that thing is worse. Gets into the garage and sprays everything. Thankfully my dog keeps it away. You do have a mouse problem! Rodents have done so much damage to my property over the years. They seem to pick on me, because I haven't heard of others who suffer as much as me*. The most expensive this year was the deck belt on my riding mower. They also started making a nest in the engine. I was able to take some of the engine apart and remove. And it's not the numbers... we seem to have the same amount of rodents as my neighbors... but they just love to ruin my stuff. Oh, have I told you about my beaver problem? :D *ETA: I just remembered that a chipmunk caused thousands of dollars of damage to my friend's SUVs (2 of them). They chewed nearly every wire under the hood. Thankfully his insurance covered, but he still had the deductible. Apparently, some manufacturers are now using soy-based wire coatings, which rodents think is food.

Your live-trapping effort is admirable. We live in the country, where there are lots of critters. The mice find their way into our laundry room from time to time, where they are introduced to the business end of a mouse trap. I feel a little bad about killing them, but not bad enough to bother live trapping, I guess. I figure, there is a huge supply, and between the snakes and the hawks and the owls, their life expectancy is probably brief anyway.
A couple months ago, my wife woke me up because she heard a sound that she described as "like a cat playing with a toy on a hard floor." (We do not have a cat, and both dogs were in the bedroom with us.) Turns out it was an exceptionally large mouse that had been caught in the trap, but not fatally so. I dispatched it and just tossed it out the back door onto the deck, figuring I could deal with it in the morning. In the morning, of course, it was gone, trap and all.
I never kill animals outdoors, not even spiders or snakes, except for wasps nests under the soffits. I figure it's their habitat; why should I? Every now and then I do have to finish off a possum or such that the dogs catch.

WWBF, your point about the cat is good. Back to the snake, then.

Ever since I put the bags in bins, I haven't caught a mouse. Therefore, using medieval logic, the mice were coming from the sleeping bags.
