I will...still in a state of shock and trying to process everything. I have an appointment with an oncologist next week.

Top 59 causes of death for Americans. Nothing on that page but ads. Lots of nice pictures, but nothing else.

Sleeping Bag Man! , My father wasn't thrilled about wearing his until he fell and the monitoring service contacted him as soon as the change in position was noted, then called me and I called EMS. He realized the value of it and from then on wore it regularly. It does take some mindset adaptation to wear one. I wasn't aware that an Apple watch had that ability; does it also contact EMS? BTW, do you have a lockbox so EMS can get in if they're closer than you are? My father installed on the outside of his house, next to the door, after we both tested a lock with a handle (like the school locker kind) and decided it could be sawed off. The lockbox was safer in our opinion. I hope you're able to convince her to take precautions; one fall and a hospital visit is something to avoid at all costs right now. Can you bribe her? I.e., get her something she really wants, something special, if she wears one?

swimswithtrout, I'm sorry to learn about the exam results, but hope that if it is tested and it's positive, it's at an early stage and is manageable. I'll be hoping and thinking of good results and control mechanisms for you.

My father installed on the outside of his house, next to the door, after we both tested a lock with a handle (like the school locker kind) and decided it could be sawed off. The lockbox was safer in our opinion. My mom's house had a secure keypad for the garage door opener. We just gave First Alert the combo and they'd deliver it to EMS if needed. We did leave the inner door unlocked for this to work.

I wasn't aware that an Apple watch had that ability; does it also contact EMS? Yes. As I understand it, when the accelerometer detects a fall the watch prompts you to ask if you're OK. If you don't respond & if no movement is detected for a minute, it automatically calls emergency services & notifies everyone on your emergency contact list. BTW, do you have a lockbox so EMS can get in if they're closer than you are? Yep. My father wasn't thrilled about wearing his until he fell and the monitoring service contacted him as soon as the change in position was noted, then called me and I called EMS. He realized the value of it and from then on wore it regularly...I hope you're able to convince her to take precautions; one fall and a hospital visit is something to avoid at all costs right now. Can you bribe her? I.e., get her something she really wants, something special, if she wears one? Sigh...this is such a fine line to walk. She still has enough faculties to be in charge of her own life, but is diminished enough to be making pretty bad choices & priorities. One side of me is totally sympathetic to her resistance - I want to see her fight for her independence & vitality. Another side of me wishes she would accept her new limitations, and seek that vitality in other ways. For example she's still talking about buying a new car, which totally terrifies me. When my grandmother was declining, she drove for too long & caused a very serious accident. Put her in the hospital for weeks, and really hurt the people in the other car. My dad still shudders with regret about that, but hindsight is 20/20. Grandma loved to drive, and taking the keys from her would've been a seriously traumatic event. I'm not even sure the ol' bird could've been overpowered, actually...she was a tough gal. Anyhoo...I make my case with Mom...up to a point...then I have to back off and give her space. I look for incremental victories, and pray to the heavens that I can win that race against time. I finally convinced her to use her walker when she gets up out of bed (dizziness while getting up caused at least one fall) - someday soon hopefully I'll talk her into using a cane around the rest of the house. I really could've done without this damned pandemic. Before COVID, she was a relative gym rat, for her age. Now I can see the strength ebbing out of her, and she isn't using the home equipment we got nearly enough.
