P.S. I forgot to mention that my phone has a much nicer screen then any GPS and with the Earthmate app it is more than the equivalent of a dedicated mapping GPS. Well, it ought to. I think I paid about $350 for my GPS. My current phone was $1400. It has more processing power than my last laptop. And the camera in my 12 Pro Max is edging into my looking just a tad skeptically at my dSLR rigs. Scarily good as they leverage all that aforesaid computing power. The size means telephoto and enlargements aren’t comparable but otherwise...

My birthday was recently. I facilitated my family gifting me a Garmin InReach Mini. P.S. I forgot to mention that my phone has a much nicer screen then any GPS and with the Earthmate app plus some downloaded USGS quads to replace the crappy map it comes with it is more than the equivalent of a dedicated mapping GPS.
Edited to reflect my reality. Earthmate map is junk. The software is fine, tho. Albeit prone to long, long delays in delivering/receiving texts, but that's every sat device...

Edited to reflect my reality. Earthmate map is junk. I haven't worked hands on with a dedicated mapping GPS in a long while now. They also had crappy maps in them. I got a bit angry when Garmin wanted to charge me for updated maps. I always had to download my own maps into them anyway. So far with Earthmate I find it to be adequately functional might be a better way to say it. I was using Avenza and a NY/NJ trail map I bought for that. That was spot on. The Earthmate maps seem to be slightly off postionally (maybe 200+ yards). I did test the waypoints I saved with the Mini and they were spot on. Their coordinates under Avenza were correct and the Mini could bring me back to within yards of the waypoint.

And I thought I got a great deal when I paid $23 more for the Lunar Solo last year.

Well as an senior, for this pandemic Christmas won't be exchanging gifts on actual Christmas day. A couple weeks ago bought then delivered a Lavoit H-132 HEPA air purifier to 3 brothers that regularly stay in motels per their regional service business so they have less chance of becoming sick. Had already bought one for myself 4 weeks ago since I'll be staying in lodging during the winter ski season. As someone long able to buy any modest material goods, I never have a wish list so others need to find something novel.
Amazon shows I've ordered 30 items since that pandemic broke in March. Two months ago bought an orienting compass after apparently misplacing my old one. A week ago ordered one of these Zeagoo lightweight windbreaker women's packable raincoat hooded waterproof jacket in gray for a discounted $22, that am wearing as I type over a lightweight down shirt. Having bought several zippered nylon shells that mosquitoes cannot poke probosci through, over decades for wearing while carrying a backpack, this is particularly well made.

As noted on recent thread 3 weeks ago also bought from REI a new Nemo Aya 800 fill power down sleeping bag. On Black Friday bought a GoPro Hero 8 Bundle at Best Buy for $100 off and then yesterday on Cyber Monday ordered a couple 64gb C10 U3 memories at a huge discount that will pick up this morning. My first action camera will first see some use skiing and later hiking and backpacking. One of the most difficult toys to understand use of due to the tiny limited interface to much complexity, have already spent several boring hours slowly methodically going through the manual while actuating functions and have much more to go.
Looks like my Tahoe ski season is now sadly going into a state pandemic lock down so more time sheltered in place thus today just bought two more used science books from Amazon:
The Ancient Origins of Consciousness: How the Brain Created Experience (The MIT Press) by Feinberg, Todd E.
The Feeling of What Happens: Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness by Damasio, Antonio

One of the most difficult toys to understand use of due to the tiny limited interface to much complexity, I'll 2nd this. This summer on a hiking trip a lady who I had never met before heard that I was in "IT" and as most people do just assume that people who use a computer for a living know ALL when it comes to things that use electrons. She handed me hers and asked me how to use it. I looked it and then looked at her and said... I have no idea, I've never used one.

I rarely use my GoPro's interface. Tiny and difficult. The GoPro is linked to my phone and I use the app there. By far easier.

Dark on the inside, to aid sleeping in late or to darken full moons. As tents get insanely sheer, almost transparent, that is an issue. I love the starlight and moon lit landscapes, but by Gawd we evolved with bear caves or wikiups.

I usually wear a Buff when I sleep (usually on top of my head; when it’s cold the buff goes around the neck and a thick fleece hat goes on top). If there is too much light, I just pull the buff down over my eyes.
