That was the end of the new trekking skis for this year. What are trekking skis?

my made up name for Altai Hok skis. Altai Hok ski with universal bindingI wanted a pair of 145cm Hoks. I have a pair of 127cm Black Diamond Glidelites, similar but without metal edges. Same 1/2 length skins on a very fat ski. The GL's are really sliding snowshoes. Cool for hiking trails but kinda floppy clown shoes when trying to actually ski. And they are spooky on icy sidehills. I prefer them to long snowshoes (36" and more). I have tried the longer Hoks, and they would make a great cross country packing ski, er trekking, for winter snow camping. But like I said next year. I have everything thing else including a home-built pulk or sled. And snow. Our early snow sucks in the Bighorn Mountains this year.

I've been sending subtle hints to Santa to get me a pair of new hiking pants for a while now... And hand warmers! Can't get enough of those in the cold season. Any suggestion for good hiking pants for women to put on my list? I'm in agreement with rebeccad about fit but FWIW, I've found that Prana, Arcteryx and Patagonia hiking pants fit me well. More importantly, they fit similarly, somewhat short but wide-waisted. They also come in different seam lengths, which I really appreciate. The quick-dry lightweight Arcteryx hiking pants I have were a bit of a splurge for me but they've been super durable. LOVE them. Which ones are those from Arcteryx? Prana has good pockets but I haven't tried them, honestly I've always felt like they look too sexy for me... Have you maybe tried KUHL? I was thinking about something like this ... These Horizn skinny look similar to my old hiking pants.

I've always felt like they look too sexy for me... LOL. Somehow, I've never really thought of "hiking pants" and "sexy" in the same thought.

Which ones are those from Arcteryx? They're the "Parapet" that they don't make anymore. Disappointing because I thought they were really popular. Not sure if the replacement is intended to be Crestons or the Palisades but they both have a "younger" look which usually means smaller pockets and skinnier legs. Have you maybe tried KUHL? I have a couple of casual pants from Kuhl. I love the "Trekr" line for the fabric. I've found that Kuhl pants run small and long which, unfortunately, is the exact opposite of me. So, I have to size up and choose a style available in a shorter inseam. I've also found their pants to be really heavy, so I wear them around town and camping/dayhikes but almost never backpacking. Note that I haven't seen all the different styles and while they list the fabric weights, they don't specify the garment weight, so there may be lightweight styles I'm not aware of. Prana has good pockets but I haven't tried them, honestly I've always felt like they look too sexy for me... Agree that some of the Prana styles are super low-waisted (I think that's what you mean by "sexy".) But a guy friend raved about the Zion pants, so I got a pair of the Halle's, which is the women's version. I consider them a casual pant and wear them around town, again a little heavy like the Kuhls.

Looking at those Kuhl pants, they all seem pretty trim-cut. For hiking pants, I want a looser fit as that has always seemed cooler to me. PrAna pants I've tried in the past have had the low waist, which a) doesn't fit me and b) doesn't work well under a pack.

My birthday was recently. I facilitated my family gifting me a Garmin InReach Mini. For being older and solo hiking it really gives peace of mind. I likely will carry all the time going forward if I can deal with the subscription price. It is way tougher and waterproof than my phone. It is dedicated to be a emergency signaling device and I have confidence in it. The GPS is very basic but with a well printed waterproof map (In trying to find a link I discovered they no longer make Adventure paper. I'll have to try another brand when this pack runs out) I have every confidence in my navigation if my phone goes south. No more full size GPS' for me. -A 4-weight flyrod. Eyeing the Scott Centric 8'5". A high dollar purchase that will probably have to wait. But it would be a great all-around rod. I would also need a new reel to pair with the rod. This was something I hadn't really considered. I have always wanted a pack-able fly rod set up. I would have to learn how to fly fish. I grew on on the salt water so my fishing rods are heavy winches compared to fly rods.

My new gear arrived, before Thanksgiving! Originally scheduled to arrive about Dec, 10th. Dark on the inside, to aid sleeping in late or to darken full moons. Bright on the outside to aid SAR, if needed. Nice. I used my 20-degree quilt on my September trip, in camps up to 12,000+ feet. The only night I was cold was when I was camped on snow, so that doesn't really count in my mind. My quilt is very close to the same color on both sides. That was a mistake--I sometimes get it upside down when setting up. (Not a big deal, but an irritant.)

I forgot to mention that my phone has a much nicer screen then any GPS and with the Earthmate app it is more than the equivalent of a dedicated mapping GPS. Well, it ought to. I think I paid about $350 for my GPS. My current phone was $1400. It has more processing power than my last laptop.
