If you like your coffee strong, try Cafe Bustelo. Not sure if it comes in little instant packs. But I have a vague memory of taking some on a trip, or maybe a little jar of instant.

Little individual packets aren’t essential. Carry bulk instant in a film canister (remember those?) or similar small/light container. I’m going to be switching over to that when I finally use up the packets I have. Trader Joe’s carries a pretty good instant in jars. I’m trying to reduce my use of single-use plastics.

I finally thought of something I’d like, gear-wise, and that’s even within the budget of my kids: LUCI lights, or similar. For car-camping, the friend I came west with also had an emergency light sort of thing that had a powerful magnet—which allowed us to stick it to the car, or to a metal picnic-shelter support so it really lit up the table for after-dark dinner prep.

Oh yeah, plastic film canisters. Used them in the late 70s until whenever I went fully digital. Ilford, Kodak... Ilford made/makes really good B&W film, and I still use their papers almost exclusively for printing. I looked it up and Cafe Bustelo is available in the little single serving packs, but I remember taking a small glass jar with me to South America. Or maybe I bought it there, I don't remember. Looks like it comes in 1.75, 3.5, and 7.5oz jars. It claims to be an "Espresso Instant Coffee", which I suppose accounts for its strength. I never drink it at home for some reason, but I do take it on trips. I've probably got a jar in the basement with my other BP supplies.

in a film canister (remember those?) I miss the old screw top aluminum film canisters. They were great for backpacking.

Find a diabetic friend. We have all of those test strips that come in similar sized plastic canisters as the old film ones.

The aluminum canisters predate my photography! Is that a nice way of telling me I'm old?

Hiking Santa got slapped down by the bike demon in my bubble. That was the end of the new trekking skis for this year. I am going to have to live with what I have. And the bikes are part of my transportation as well as recreation.
My winter bike minor upgrades blew up when a local bike shop overhaul last year led to a chain, NPI, of events that trashed the aged out drive train. Beautiful mid 80's steel MTB frame set and fork, so it is getting a Dutch-Canadian snow and ice treatment with internal drive hub, more upright cockpit, and dyno hub in the front wheel for the long winter nights. Even with me doing all the work it still $700 in parts. I am not doing all; the wheel weaving and spoking up is being outsourced.
Seriously, I should be so thankful I can even make this post. After the election, I made the decision that 10% of my income for the next years is to go to social justice that I believe in.

My new gear arrived, before Thanksgiving! Originally scheduled to arrive about Dec, 10th. Dark on the inside, to aid sleeping in late or to darken full moons. Bright on the outside to aid SAR, if needed.
