I like being able to curl my big toe I like being able to walk without pain. Hey Santa, can you help me out with the most important gear of all?

I like being able to curl my big toe I like being able to walk without pain. Hey Santa, can you help me out with the most important gear of all? I have spoken with several people who have had this fusion (of some interest to me as I may end up there myself eventually), and they reported that it didn’t affect their ability to walk at all. None, I think, were backpackers, however.

they reported that it didn’t affect their ability to walk at all That's encouraging. With a stiffer soled hiking shoe in the forefoot, flex shouldn't come into play all that much. If I have to give up playing softball due to difficulty sprinting, that wouldn't be the worst thing. With serious injuries the last two years I was already considering retirement from the "explosive motion sport" which has been part of my life since I could swing a bat.

Tragically, there is nothing that I actually need. So a few wants that I may pick up in the next couple of months:
-A 4-weight flyrod. Eyeing the Scott Centric 8'5". A high dollar purchase that will probably have to wait. But it would be a great all-around rod. I would also need a new reel to pair with the rod.
-New backpack. My go-to all-around backpack right now is a Gregory Z55 that is getting long in the tooth, and is developing some holes in the fabric. I would love something like a HMG Southwest 3400 or a ULA Circuit.
-New mid-weight puffy. I am eyeing the Arcteryx Atom LT Hoody, currently on sale at REI for just under $200.
-GPS. I don't own a smartphone, and have never used anything for navigation but map and compass (with which I am competent, but just barely). One of the Garmin handheld units might be nice to have.
There's more, so much more. I love gear....

A map display gps is a convenience with its “your location on the map at a glance” plus, my favorite, the “what’s over that ridgeline and should I climb up there to check out that interesting lake or stream”? Set to align with where you point it looking “over” topography is quite fun, if distracting.

I usually triangulate the vehicle, camp, entry/exit points to canyons and other necessary or interesting points with a compass and field notebook but gps can give valuable info too and each serves the other as a backup in difficult country.

Quote Driftwoody. ”If I have to give up playing softball due to difficulty sprinting, that wouldn't be the worst thing” I can relate - I loved playing softball, and it was a major part of my social life too until I got bifocals. Too much risk that I would misjudge where the ball was coming and get smashed in the face.......

Bought a pair of single lens to judge the ball better at night. My senior team is competitive at the national level and I would sorely miss the game & teammates, but this may be time for me to move on.

Nothing related to backpacking. I'm pretty much set. I am, however, having my old Bianchi bicycle repainted, and I'll be upgrading components when it returns. I'm also eyeballing a Ciocc San Cristobal, but that's TBD. Yeah, I'm an old roadie, back when bikes, and a few hard men, were made of steel.
In the meantime I plan to replace my Specialized Diverge at some point, but probably not before Christmas - I don't like disc brakes, but again, I'm a roadie.

Since I’ve never been the least bit competent at any ball-based sports, I’ve been able to avoid that kind of issue 😂😜

I would love something like a HMG Southwest 3400 I bought 2400 and 3400 Junctions. Only used on practice hikes to date, but I like them. I don't think I've put more than 20 lbs in either so far, but I'm not disappointed by the lack of stays or load lifters. Thanks to... dang, what's his name? I can see his avatar... Westy?

Can relate, as I'm sure most can, on crazy year.
Thinking about upgrading base layers. Been using lower quality brand synthetic stuff for a few years now and looking to upgrade to full Merino.
