So, what are you asking Santa for this year? Anything you have your fingers crossed for? Or planning to buy for yourself? It's been a tough year, personally, professionally, and socially/politically/pretty-much-everything-else, so I'm thinking of splurging on something I don't need but is reasonably useful...

I am adding a 20º UGQ quilt to my gear, just in case I get back to elevation some time in the future. It'll be here in 3-6 weeks.

Time to step up from the iPhone 7+ to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Don’t need anything else hiking wise but I’m sure going to get that.
The iPhone is used for photography, gps and reference books among other things.

A new pack! My old and trusty friend bit the bullet this year.

(I'm interpreting the question as limited to hiking gear.) I need a new down puffy and a camera. I'll probably just buy a used camera from ebay, because I've had good luck that way in the past and I only use it for hiking and occasional wildlife photography at home. The puffy could be a good item for my Christmas list, though. I'm not so picky about that as I am about many other BPing items. (My family doesn't usually buy me BP gear unless they know exactly what I want.)
I also need a new pack soon, but that's definitely something I need to pick out for myself.

(I'm interpreting the question as limited to hiking gear.) Well, "gear" can probably be interpreted pretty loosely... For instance, I'm thinking about a new car. Meets the "useful" criteria but "reasonable", not so much. :D

Maps and gps It does a lot more and can be very entertaining as to books, audiobooks, music or even movies when pinned down. It has its place and saves a lot of hiking weight and bulk for me.

A COVID vaccine that I can actually get and that works on me. Continued access to food and basic supplies. I'll eventually splurge on a new piano, but not until I move.

I just ordered a new down hoodie, as REI had them 50% off. I’ve long wanted a hood on my down jacket, so this was big for me.
And I’m planning to get a new 10-degree quilt over the winter.
I guess I’m my own Santa.

I remain woefully Santa-less so I am going to leave the season for the both practical and responsible.
I won't travel this season. Then wound up house watching for two friends that are. One is desperate to get out of Wyoming and is house hunting in Washington, her homeland. The other to her family compounds in Lake Tahoe and Connecticut. So my "Staycation" is local winter camping in 2-3 day bursts.\
I went on WORN GEAR with Patagonia this morning and amazingly found the deep winter mid layers, top and bottom, that I needed to do my deep winter backpacking near home. I am now complete.

Good choice, reviews are the camera system in the Pro Max is a significant upgrade to the 11 Pro Max and that one is very good. I get images without enlargement that rival my dSLR. Which is a Nikon d850. And for reading the larger screen is a nice plus.

I was tempted to pull the trigger on the Garmin inReach Mini on sale for $249, but I don't know when I'd get the chance to use it. I'm still recovering from my broken/dislocated ankle, and I just returned from having my arthritic big toe joint x-rayed. It's trashed, and will likely have to be fused. I've never had a satellite messenger and now my backpacking forays are less likely to venture into country where I might need such a device.
I'm hard pressed to identify any gear I need that wouldn't be a slight upgrade of something which already serves me well. One can always shave a few ounces here and there. I mostly hang rather than tent camp. I have a 20* bottom quilt but still use my high quality down bags on top. It would be nice to have a dedicated TQ but the good ones are quite expensive.
If Santa really existed I might ask him for one, but my wife notsomuch.

Did you get any info on outcomes from that procedure? The podiatrist is of the opinion it should not restrict me from hiking & backpacking. The options are: - Just live with it (though it will only get worse over time)
- Cortisone shot (temporary relief that can't be repeated often)
- Surgical clean out and treat with orthotics (but arthritis could come back)
- Fuse the two bones (a permanent fix with losing range of motion)
- Implant (essentially an artificial joint, that might last less than 10 years)

Good luck! I like being able to curl my big toe, but I'd doubtless feel different in your shoes.
