I still use a Hank Roberts mini and will do so until I exhaust my fuel canister supply Keep the empties. I understand they can be refilled. You may want to do a search on classiccampstoves.com/

Sweet. Those old stoves are addictive. My latest acquisition was a 400A701 dated 09/88 In case you are unaware, the date your's was manufactured should be stamped on the metal bracket above the tank. Thank you! We Didn't realize that. My dad still uses one from when I was little (very similar to Eric's) lets just say 39+ years haha. With extra fuel & cook set, it is significantly heavier and more spacious that our new mini-mo's. But for longevity, I can't imagine anything outliving these old school ones We've never even changed the pump assembly on either dads or ours.

Well, I took advantage of the REI sale and some member rewards and went for the Jetboil Minimo today. Supposedly it can simmer if I want it to unlike the previous models. It may get replaced down the road as I become more experienced or whatever but I think for now it's probably a good starting point for a newbie like me Now I just need a backpacking pack (have a day hike pack, not big enough), a bear can or similar, water filtration/etc, and food and I should be set for my first trip in decades once it thaws out a bit in the Sierra.

Let us know how it works out. Real world positives and negatives are always welcomed.

We love our Jetboil Mini-Mo's. They do simmer. My husband uses his all winter on the jobsite and has held up great 2 out of our 3 are now 2 years old. Zero problems.

Voted 'least likely to burn down the forest' by myself.
