This is not my cup of tea. A long time ago I did something similar only on mountain bikes going down a paved on a mountain side in TN. However, no matter how hard I tried to break 50mph I could only get 49.5mph. I think it had something to do with the tires and the aerodynamics of the bike. That or I was lacking in pedal pushing power from my legs. I was doing this with a friend and he was ahead of me. At point he leaned so far over on a curve that his pedal caught the pavement. I thought I was gonna have to call the local ranger & ambulance to come scrap him off the pavement but he was able to save himself. Exciting times!

Brutal headwind on the way up the 1200' climb. But with the help of the tailwind, I hit 61.3 mph on the way down!!!! 😳 🔥 Then I passed a car on the way down the lower part of the road. 😅

I used to be more of an adrenaline junkie than I am now, but 60 on a bike? Nope!

I had typical mountain bike tires with a appropriate treads. My friend and I were not planning our quick trip down the mountain it was a bonus after a long ride up a mountain path but we liked it so much that we put our bikes in his car at the bottom and drove back to the top to do all over again.

In my teens I bike toured a lot in the summers here in the NE. We did a lot of trips in VT and NH. We would take 3-4 hours of climbing and get to the top of a pass then lunch break. We needed to be ready for the 30-45 minutes of white knuckle downhill. I think the weight of the panniers tended to make at least my bike start to shudder at about 45 mph.

I'm guessing that you were on a road bike which would make a big difference. Hardtail mountain bike with front suspension locked and with fairly bald tires. I was also carrying weight in the back (clothes, etc. for commuting to/from work). And like I mentioned a stiff tailwind. I've gone down that hill before without the tailwind and I max out around 45.

In the previous millennium I used to regularly spin out of a 52x13 on a straight downhill in the area. I could hit 50mph but just ran out of gear to go any faster. It wasn't really long, but it was pretty much the same pitch going up the other side. Oof. It took pretty much all summer before I was able to get up the other side in a 42x21 without dying. A 23 would have been welcome, but I was too poor/cheap/hard to buy another cassette.

I was only what I'd call an armature. My good friend who talked like you did a lot of racing and on a sunday afternoon he'd go for a 100 mile stroll. I only did a 100 miles "stroll" once, and of course I picked the hottest day of the year - 95-100F. The little Avocet computer died in the heat, and I think I only went about 95 or 98 miles. I had really bad cramps for hours, despite a couple of stops to buy and drink a quart of orange juice, and lots of water along the way. My rides were generally in the 40-60 mile range, but on weekends I'd preface them with a 10k run.

Somehow, I can pay $65 or 70 to enter an event, but not spend half that buying food along the way when I’m riding my own ride? I think our longest training ride might have hit 80 miles.

Interesting but she lost me on the assertion that consciousness doesn't influence quantum outcomes. Apparent random behavior doesn't mean not being influenced. It could mean we just don't see the pattern.

I'm thinkin' about starting a magazine about backpacking. Gear reviews, feature stories about destinations, and backpacker profiles - old, young, thruhikers, weekend warriors et al.
Survival tips such as dehydrated water.
Safety tips like how to avoid setting your bathrobe on fire, and what to do if attacked by a drop bear.
Maybe an occasional nostalgia piece on a subject like external frame packs.
Tips on how to pronounce words like Toulumne and Uyuni.
Alongside it will be a forum where subscribers and non-subscribers alike can debate and share info on many of the same topics. Software upgrades will be seamless.
Whaddya think?
