When I load Google the front page it has 9 icons and a plus under the search box. They are the shrtcuts to the pages I used the most. The first is for Google.

In Chrome, my new tab opens with 8 icons, none of which are Google. This place is one icon.

Maybe I should have explained that the funny bit is that there isn't much of a need for a Google shortcut icon to the main Google page on the Google front page , I am already there.

But did you click on it, just to see if it would start a never-ending cascade that would envelop the entire universe? That's what I would have done.

Your Chrome is set to display the new tab page on startup. That is the default. You can change it to something else if you prefer like just the plain Google homepage.
The icons are your most visited so that's why Google is one of them.

The icons are your most visited so that's why Google is one of them. We all think differently... I just think that it is ironical to have a shortcut to Google on the main Google page. (I am already there.... ) I honestly don't know of a simpler way to explain it. OK, let me try. One of the other shortcuts is to the local paper. So I click on that and it takes me to the main page of that paper. The same happens to the rest, of course, that is why they are there. Saves me typing it. Now if I click on the Google shortcut , guess what ? it takes me to the page I am already on.
