I've always, over these many years, put my sleeping bag in a compression sack then into my backpack at the bottom of my pack. Got along just fine doing it like that. But now, I'm looking at stuffing it, no compression sack, down to the bottom of my pack. I've tried this method on my last 2 backpacks along with stuffing my tent body down on top of the bag. I didn't just come up with this method, but have seen it done this way on quite a few YT channels, as well as to talking to other backpackers. Pros/cons doing it this way.

Putting it in a waterproof stuff sack protects it if you go heels up in a gnarly creek crossing.
Yes, I've done it. Things that got wet were only the things that didn't suffer for getting wet, because the dry layers of warm clothing were in the dry sack along with the sleeping gear. Same goes for rain.

I've read that some backpackers use trash compactor bags and that they work extremely well. But they have to be compactor bags, not your everyday trash bag.

I like a waterproof stuff sack: the softer package is more compliant for space versus the hard cylinder of a compression bag.

Most of the time, I just cram my quilt in last and let it take up any space available. If i really think rain is a possibility, or a creek crossing is difficult and during a shoulder season, I will put it in a dry bag. Sometimes I even close the dry bag. I pay close attention to the weather forecasts, and carry a dry bag loose in the pack for emergency use. As my dominant hiking locales are SW desert, rain just isn't a big concern.

I've long used a waterproof stuff sack just in case, although for the last couple years I've had a waterproof pack, so it's superfluous. A compression sack doesn't make enough difference to be worth the extra weight.

I put my quilt in the bag first/bottom, loosely, along with in-camp down puffy and sleep clothes. Then put everything else on top, letting the load compress the quilt only as much as needed. My pack is DCF so waterproof.

I put my sleeping bag in a SeatoSummit Evac dry sack. It's heavier than some dry sacks but the eVent bottom allows air to be forced out by gear packed on top of it and fit the available space better.

I'm too paranoid of my quilt getting wet so it always goes into seatosummit dry sack. If I have clothing I wish to keep dry they go into a bread bag.

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. I've got a plethora of Sea To Summit dry bags/sacks so I'll go that route.

I have one of those. It's not the one I use most, but it's less of a chore to stuff than some others. Stuffing my sleeping bag is one of my least favorite camp chores.

That's too cool. I gotta get one. I put my tent and camp shoes in the bottom of the pack, so that could soil my sleeping bag, and I want to keep it dry. But I like the theory of not stuffing a sleeping bag. If I had a waterproof backpack with a big outer pocket for my tent, I throw my unstuffed sleeping bag in the bottom.

I put mine inside a waterproof stuff sack that is much larger than the smallest size I could use. The reason is that the sack can then take the shape available rather than forming a bowling ball. Same for my camp/night clothing.
