the hubs and I are headed to AZ in a couple weeks to do a little recon on our future business. We rented a small camper van and will be mostly taking advantage of AZ's lenient dispersed camping along the FS roads. Anyone have any favorite spots that we might be able to locate that you'd recommend? We'd like to avoid campgrounds if possible. We were also thinking of checking out Castle Creek Wilderness and possibly doing an ATV ride somewhere during our travels if anyone has any feedback on either of those.

It's hard to come up with anyplace in particular. When I car camp it's usually somewhere other than the Phoenix to Flagstaff corridor. However, there is a LOT of forest service and BLM land in central Arizona. The best piece of advice I could offer would be to buy the Delorme Arizona Atlas and Gazetteer. It is invaluable when doing any back road traveling. It delineates Federal and State land plus private land and Reservations. They are about 20 bucks well worth it.

I actually downloaded an app called Avenza Maps because that's what the AZ Forest service recommended, but I think I will get the Delorme Atlas too. And we are open to car camping anywhere within a reasonable drive of those areas, it doesn't necessarily need to be along or right off of 17.

Plan and prepare: check out the National Forest websites, like Coconino, Tonto NF's fro travel and dispersed camping regs. They are not all the same. I was planning to hike out of Prescott AZ and onto the Prescott Forest and throw down a camp near the site of my parent's resident cabin, now long gone. (50th PHS reunion). The area is now in a Wildfire Urban Interface (WUI) and a big section is closed to any camping. There are approved primitive designated sites listed on the website. Probably party sites from my '60's youth This is things the map app don't cover. I have a brother that has a retirement near Flagstaff and says Coconino NF has some similar areas in and around Sedona.

Another atlas to consider (and the one I prefer to use) is from Benchmark:
