Venerable Mom, 92 years old, living in quasi independent living, was fine yesterday.
Today she had a stomach ache, fever of 99 (97 is normal for her, and it went up to 101), fatigue, chills, some shaking.
To make a long story short she was transported by ambulance to a hospital. It was NOT the hospital the EMTs said they would take her to, which is why I ended up at the wrong ER.
Naturally, the lady behind the plexiglass at the hospital couldn't find VM in their system. But here's the kicker.
The top of her mask was aligned with her lower lip, rendering it useless for any particles entering or leaving her respiratory system. Notwithstanding the patients and family, I would have expected her to be more cognizant of and respectful toward her coworkers, with whom she freely interacted.
But I was so pissed off at being directed to the wrong hospital that I just stormed out and went to the correct hospital, where there was more confusion.

That’s not a situation for “mask shaming”. That’s a situation for a complaint to her supervisors. completely not your job but still.
Unmasked in a medical setting is completely beyond the pale. It’s that casual attitude that’s killing so many people in medical assisted living facilities.

Agreed that woman was totally irresponsible and should have been reported to her superiors. This is especially true considering it was a medical setting.

I've gotten good response when I brought hospital administrators in on an issue. reuben, I hope your mother is okay. Was she admitted or released after the ER visit?

I'm hearing that some healthcare facilities are testing their employees on a regular basis, so they may have some relaxed rules when it comes to staff-only areas.
Not advocating or excusing.

I'm hearing that some healthcare facilities are testing their employees on a regular basis, so they may have some relaxed rules when it comes to staff-only areas. Not advocating or excusing. I expect that’d depend a bit on whether the plexiglas barrier was solid or not. A full barrier with a microphone pass through and a mask wouldn’t be necessary: but as soon as there’s an opening for sound to get through and a mask should be correctly worn or it’s useless. The other challenge is the staff aren’t in any sort of bubble so they’re all contamination threats both to other staff and patients. Hence the terrible death tolls in residential facilities where the residents are only exposed to staff, who leave and return.... with current delays in virus RT-PCR assay results reporting there’s still too large a window for an infection to get introduced as I see it: containment protocols need to be followed. Medical facilities always find that challenging unfortunately. I quit visiting a very convenient cafeteria at my med school where my research lab was located when I all too frequently found myself in line with someone in full scrubs plus booties. Versus my old institute where actual Nobel Prize winners still dropped their lab coats outside the doors before entering. Good habits need reinforcement.
