When the harness and back become white with salt buildup the pack goes into a water soak and the zippers get the brush. Hang in the backyard in shade to dry. Never had to do anything more.

If I want my pack really clean, I hike in the fall in the thickets on a nice rainy afternoon. Guaranteed to be scrubbed, brushed, and rinsed. There is occasionally blood residue from the scratches I incur, but the pack itself comes out clean usually. Seriously though, I usually give my pack a light wipe down in the fall before spraying with a little DWR to help repel moisture.
