Was scouting west side Sangre de Cristo trailheads in early July and arrived in Crestone. Crestone kinda cool but exuberates a creepy hippie lost colony feeling. There is a campground there and just beyond a trailhead. Was informed that a bear had broken into a vehicle there. On my reconnaissance mission did find three trailheads devoid of vehicles and little or no recent log in's on the trail register. Presenting Cotton Creek TH - 5 days - no human encounters - blow downs galore! Upon return on the 5th day still no other vehicles at trailhead.
The other trailheads with no visible activity were Rito Alto TH and Major TH. Garber Creek and Hot Springs TH had 3 vehicles; mostly day hikers going to the Hot Springs. TH serves two trails. Skipped Black Canyon and Wild Cherry TH's. Have fun and I hope your game plan exceeds your expectations!

Good info, Westy. Yes, Crestone is a unique place. As you say, the two popular THs near Crestone are North Crestone Creek (with the campground) and South Crestone Creek (which also is the TH for Willow Lake). Those other trails to the north are far more lonesome. I won't be doing any BPing from Crestone, but I'll certainly have time for some day hikes--I may check out some of those THs.

I'm up for a day hike in the Crestone area if you are there on Saturday, October 3rd. That sounds like a plan! Maybe Willow Lake? Or, if the weather is bad, the old road going south toward the dunes makes a nice low-elevation hike. Or I’d also be happy to drive up your way.

Anything in the Sangres is usually good. I have not been to Willow Lake. That Comanche/Venable loop is always good, as well.
Or, we could do the Monarch Pass to Marshall Pass on the CDT. That one is about 11 miles with an overall elevation loss.
Or, if you want to come to the Gunnison area, I could take you up the Baldys in the West Elk's. Or a peak above Crested Butte. Several good options to choose from.

burntfoot: Just checking in on this...I will definitely want to do Willow Lake at some point while I'm in the Crestone area. But I could do it on my own earlier in the week if you'd rather do a hike up your way on 10/03. I'm typically an early riser, so it'd be no big deal for me to drive up your way early that morning if that's what you prefer. Just let me know what you're thinking.

October 3rd may not work now, unfortunately. Gunnison's marching band may be doing 2 exhibition shows that day to raise money for new uniforms. October 4th will probably be a better day. If you want to come over here, I could get you a good hike.

Oct 4 works just as well for me. Should we plan on that?

I'm in for October 4th. My wife gave me the green light after I offered to help a co-worker of hers move this Saturday.
Ideas: 1. CDT from Monarch Pass to Marshall Pass, with option to climb Ouray Peak. This is between where we are both at. We could meet on Marshall Pass and drive one vehicle over to Monarch Pass and start from there. Besides my Colorado Trail trip years ago, I've done this one twice since including once with my dad when he was 60 (which I am now).
2. Over by you, we could do the Comanche/Venable loop from the Crestone side. I've done this one once and loved it.
3. Over this way, we could the baldys in the West Elk Wilderness, hike and find the fossils in the Fossil Ridge Wilderness (I know where they are). Or, we could climb one of the peaks near Crested Butte (Teocali is my favorite; others are Avery, Bellevue, Gothic, Purple, Bald, and others.

Monarch to Marshall Pass sounds great. Let’s plan on that unless the weather is bad.
I’ll PM you about contact info, etc.

Can I connect from Virginia via Zoom?? At my age I take social distancing seriously.
