UGH...we have been in a fog like smoke situation and this is at home. The worst was two days ago, though, not as "foggy" but dark ash falling. We are at the bottom of the west side Sherwin Grade, near Bishop, and if any of y'all know where we are...we cannot see the mountains at all. Just a few miles from the base of the Sierra.
Hopefully it will clear out this overnight. Super windy in Bishop today, but the wind is in the wroong direction here at home.
(We went up into the White Mountains yesterday to get out of the smoke. Didn't acco, plis that but it WAS cooler.)

How bad is it in Napa? How bad is it?
At 8 a.m. in Napa this morning, I tried to take a photo of our backyard. On the one hand, it looked as if it were snowing...as ash fell from the sky at a steady pace. But it was difficult to capture the scene on my camera. because it was so dark that the camera's auto-flash deployed.
Yes, in what would normally be broad daylight, any outdoor photos required a flash. And that flash lit up the flecks of ash falling from the sky. It was so bad that when I got up this morning I thought I had misread the clock, because it was dark outside...
Absolutely apocalyptic.

This doesn't show smoke but it is an excellent interactive map from the NY Times showing where the West is burning

Looks like some rain for at least the mountains of Oregon and almost all of Washington is forecast by Monday. As to “escape”, the smoke can travel all the way to the East Coast on some days. Then a couple of southern forest fires (the National Forest next to Houston TX for one) just adds to it all.
If you aren’t on a boat circling Hawaii right now, you aren’t escaping ...

Worse and worse. “ Trail Closures Due to the Rattlesnake Fire, wilderness trails in Sequoia National Park are currently closed, including the High Sierra Trail between Kaweah Gap and Junction Meadow and Rattlesnake Canyon, Soda Canyon, Lost Canyon, Big Five and Little Five Lakes Basins, and the Big Arroyo and Chagoopa Plateau. For the most recent updates, check the Trail Conditions web page for details about trail closures. Check the Rattlesnake Fire incident web page for the latest trail closures. The Rattlesnake is in wilderness and does not pose a risk to structures. If you're planning a backpacking trip in Mineral King area that crosses into Sequoia National Forest, trail closures due to the SQF Fire Complex (Castle and Shotgun fires) may impact your trip.” www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

Trust me, the smoke that travels across the country is nothing like what we are experiencing out here. At 5 p.m. yesterday the little dial on Airnow.gov had our local air pegged to the far right—“beyond measurement” or something like that. By 10 p.m. it was back to merely “very unhealthy,” so I don’t know if that was an anomaly or a glitch in the reporting.

but just to be safe I'm staying inside, or in the car as much as I can. Go outside, enjoy yourself. Your air quality couldn't be much better. www.iqair.com/us/usa/michigan/detroitaqicn.org/map/michigan/As to “escape”, the smoke can travel all the way to the East Coast on some days. It's so diluted by the time it reaches it the east coast that the only effect it has is pretty sunsets.

Your air quality couldn't be much better. Actually, that's a good point. The wise city honchos decided to "milleniafie" the city by creating downtown outdoor areas, while closing down access to all except 2 of the N/S access streets. Guess who lives on one of those streets? Traffic increased by probably triple percentages, with wanna be Indy 500 folks racing down the streets at well over the speed limit.

Just FYI... here's a good interactive map that shows air quality readings throughout the US (and world): aqicn.org/map/northamerica/and aqicn.org/forecast/model/ncep-aqm/ (use the 3 bars in the upper right corner to slow the speed) BTW, look at the Chinese and Indian urban centers. A typical day there is like a bad smoke day on the west coast. Ugh.

Hmmm ... the East Coast instead of slowly sautéed hiker down here. All I’ve been doing is going by smoke gradient maps but maybe need to add the local weather update. Upstate New York could add a 3 for 1 beer coupon to entice travelers. I don’t think that’s greedy.. Thick smoke ended my 2017 Or to Wa PCT hike early so I’m a bit picky.

All I’ve been doing is going by smoke gradient maps Those maps might be measuring smoke in the stratosphere (for example), rather than ground level.

My only air purifier is the AC. And the smoke has kept things cooler, so it’s not running so much. On the up side, it’s let me leave the blinds open so the house isn’t so dark, which is better for my mood.
