On August 12th, I will need a ride from the Yellowstone South Entrance (inside the park) to the Old Faithful area. How can I do this in the era of Covid? I know I can hire a shuttle to come up from Jackson but I'm looking for something less expensive than having someone drive 4 hours round trip to shuttle me for a half hour.

That's more than a 4 hour round trip. If you don't want to hire someone from Jackson, your best bet is to hitch hike. Wear a mask when you do this.

I’ve never had a problem hitching a ride in the park and I’ve done it a lot. But that was pre-Covid. Who knows now? Definitely wear a mask. I suspect someone with an open bed pickup will pick you before long. “Long” being a relative term.

Yes, I will absolutely wear a mask. And maybe even wave around some hand sanitizer.
I should make a sign since I know ahead of time where I want to go.

When I worked there, on the back side of my parkwide topo map, I put masking tape an inch wide and letters 6 inches tall. I then blackened that tape with a magic marker. Big, and easy to see.
On the front it said "Park Employee" On the back it said "Free Tour Guide"
I had friends that were less honorable. They had cardboard that had a red cross and the letters "Medical Emergency" (They had lost a contact lens)

For short distances, I think a sign may be useful. That way people know how long they’ll be stuck with you in case you turn out to be unpleasant which I’m sure you won’t be but they don’t know that. For longer stretches, my experience is signs can be detrimental for the same reason. No one wants to be stuck with an unknown quantity for a long time in case they turn out to be jerks. Actually, though, I’m not sure a sign makes that much difference in getting a ride. I think it more important to have your pack clearly visible so people know your a hiker. A kindred spirit is more likely to pick you up then.
