About 4 years ago I was watching TV with Sonny, my cat, sitting on the sofa next to me. At some point he started to make some funny noises , a bit like when he has a fur ball in his throat but later it became more obvious he was gasping for air. Nothing I could do at that time of night so I just tried to comfor him spending most of the night awake next to him (he sleeps on my bed)
In the morning we took him to the vet . After some pocking and prodding and blood tests she diagnosed high blood pressure and dehydration. We left him there on her care understanding that he had 50-50 chances to make it. The next day we took him home, a week later he was good as gold.
Since then he takes half of a 2.5 mg tablet of Benazepril Hydrochloride everyday.
And here is where my pet pet peeve starts.
Sonny will have to take that tablet for the rest of his life. He is 16 now.
To get those tablets we need a prescription , $30. Then every 6 months we have to take him into the vet clinic for a check up. (another $100 or so)
Sonny hates the cage and spends most of the time at the vet climbing on me with a terrified look on his face ( for the first 9 years of his life he had very little human contact, his previous owner, our neighbour, could not catch him, then he took about 3 years for him not to hide when other people came to visit us. He still not comfortable with people other than myself and my wife)
For the second peeve, after having to take him to the vet to get the prescription, the medicine he takes, Benazepril Hydrochloride, is a very common one , also used on dogs and human too.
Those 2.5 mg tablets cost us (buying on line) about $1 each. (twice as much at our vet)
If I could buy from the US without prescription , by splitting a 20mg tablet it would cost me 16 c for the same 2.5 mg.
Anyway, I still have a happy cat....
