Hello all. Just wanted to introduce myself, and say hello from Bishop, California. I live in a pretty small town (pop 3800 or so), and although it's California, it is quite rural. Nearest town with more than 10,000 people in it is either 120 miles south in the next county (Ridgecrest), or two hours north, in another state (Carson City, NV).
I've been backpacking since I was a kid, and I'm 55 now. I'm fortunate to be very close to some of the most beautiful scenery on earth in the High Sierra. I'm looking forward to participating in the various forums, so thanks for hosting this.
Cheers,
Joe

Welcome, Joe! Many of us are quite familiar with Bishop, and one of your neighbors is a regular here! Glad to have you aboard. Lamebeaver and reuben will be along shortly with the entry exam.

Yes,indeed. I think few of us on the backpacking boards need an explanation of where Bishop is! What hikes have you taken this year? Any reports on the trail conditions where you are?

Welcome! Former Bishop resident, NY/VT. border now, almost bought a place in Big Pine a few years back. I might be out your way on a trip this fall out of Little Lakes Valley. Cheese bread, good jerky and mountains full of awesome light and trout. Not bad,eh? Your hiking partner is as cute as they come.

Hello from Carson City! I can't wait for this covid virus to be over so I can get out and enjoy the Sierra and the small towns down south again.

Well, just a few day hikes since March. Last week, I did take a couple of nights across the highway from the house, up Pine Creek trail. I backpacked up to Honeymoon Lake, then hiked up to Italy Pass the next day. It's pretty dry, and Italy Pass was pretty much all rock, and very little snow. Bugs were fine, all things considered. I posted a link to the photos I took on one of the photo threads... Granite Park was lovely, and the alpine meadows are full of flowers. I'm looking forward to more trips, but we're still supposed to avoid nonessential travel, so any trips will have to stay local here in the Inyo Nat'l forest for now.

It's the "big city" we usually go to when we need to scratch our itch for commerce. Both my kids also played a lot of soccer growing up, and we made that trip every weekend in the Spring for games and tournaments. Due to the pandemic, of course, we haven't been going up for anything, but I'm sure as things eventually return to normal, we'll be up there again soon enough...

Granite Park is the site of one of the most memorable mountain mornings I’ve had. We may be heading back there this summer. I know we are only supposed to take essential trips, but we can be self-contained to and from the trailheads, and honestly, if mental health counts for necessity, then a backpack into the Sierra is a necessity for me right now.
