And like SeKi has a live telephone orientation as part of the process. /?d=n One difference is that “walk ins” are now available only online but up to 14 days in advance. So “short term reservations”. In effect.

Hi! I'm trying to get a permit to do Summit lake out of Shake camp in the Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest. I can't seem to get the online system to work and I can't get anyone on the phone. Does anyone have info about getting a permit for backpacking in the Golden Trout Wilderness?

Does anyone have info about getting a permit for backpacking in the Golden Trout Wilderness? What’s the name of the trailhead and which agency manages it, that’s the key as to who issues your wilderness permit: they honor each other’s for crossing boundaries. I’ve found wilderness permits available for Inyo NF via recreation dot gov on my laptop browser when I couldn’t see that list on my iPhone recreation dot gov app. For a state forest maybe try emailing them. For Golden Trout this would be a place to start: www.sierrawild.gov/wilderness/golden-trout/

The trail head is in the Mountain Home Demonstration State Forrest but there is no backcountry camping there, you hike the Summit Trail in the Golden Trout Wilderness which is part of the Inyo National Forrest. When I go to recreation.gov I see permits for some areas of Golden Trout but not many of the trails and not this one. Does that mean the trail is not "open" or do I just get one of the other permits and go on the hike I want?

Permits for Golden Trout are free and non-quota. Probably remote now too, might just take a phone call for them to drop it in the night box.

I suspected some Th might even be self register at the trailhead but I would have to see a list before I’d gamble the drive.

Even easier than calling: 2020 Golden Trout Wilderness Permits - Under current circumstances with COVID-19, the Sequoia National Forest will offer wilderness permits virtually through our website for travel dates after June 15, 2020.
Print and completely fill out the Application for a Wilderness Visitor's Permit
Scan and email your completed application to the Sequoia National Forest to SM.FS.SequoiaNF@usda.gov
Within a day or two, you will receive a response to your email, confirming receipt of your application. Your hard copy application will then take the place of your permit for overnight stay in the Golden Trout Wilderness on the Sequoia National Forest.
Keep a copy with you and share the information with someone at home to anticipate your safe return. The Forest Service will keep an electronic copy of your application on file just in case, and for our records. It is your responsibility to monitor conditions and fire restrictions and provide for your own safety. Current road conditions and fire restrictions will be posted on this website throughout the summer.

Thank you! FYI to all I just got off phone with the Ranger at Springville. The trails are open. No camp fires, need permit for stove. He didn't have much information about trail conditions. They haven't been out to maintain trails so no doubt there will be some downed trees. Also FYI if anyone does this particular hike out of Shake Camp you don't need a permit if you don't drop down into the Summit Lake, if you camp along Long Meadow then no permit needed.

They never maintain the trails, FYI. There are zero dollars for wilderness trails in the national forests. Sequoia NF is not giving volunteer trail crews agreements, so if anything is being done out there, it's done by random public persons who happen to carry an axe or hand saw. (Chainsaws are illegal in wilderness.)

Good to know. I seem to remember years ago volunteering with a group to clear trails but that was decades ago. It's a shame they aren't letting volunteers do it, it's a very fun activity for those of us that enjoy the trails.
