This retired person will wait for after the holiday to begin taking trips out of my local area. Several parks and natural areas just opened on May 15 and more will follow by June 1. Am eager to get in a day at still closed Sonoma Coast State beach as well as a week long trip up to Redwood National Park, a long 350 mile drive. Backpacking will wait at least till the end of June and already have ideas.

What are your plans during this period of constrained activity? I have been hiking on the C&O Towpath, right alongside the Potomac River. Right now this very moment I should be sitting in my car in the parking lot of St. Christopher's church in Speedway Indiana listening to the post race coverage of the Indy 500.

Took a Tuscarora Trail hike today/Sunday in southern PA. As expected, saw no one else there. Plenty of wildlife, deer, frogs, grouse with hatchling, porcupine, garter snake. Unfortunately the views were fogged over. I've not done any hikes with major elevation gains recently, so this one took its toll.

Day hiking with a friend not too far out of town on the mountains edge. We encountered the no-so-Little Tongue River swollen with snow melt. So instead of crossing, we chose to trek the threaded game trails inside the canyon. Not many mile but 1500' ascent back out in the sleet and clouds.
Tuesday, I am taking three day, two night hike in a recommended wilderness nearby. It is work related. I know, but it true.

We took a half-hour drive on local back roads today, including a stop at an abandoned cemetery that has a couple Revolutionary War graves. The world has exploded into green and the farmers are busy planting.

It’s turned too hot for long hikes in the park, so I’m doing shorter walks in the lower park (along the creek) int he evenings, and trying to do some indoor workouts.

8am and 72F already. Doors, windows open letting the cooler air into my 2 story 2br as forecast shows hottest day of year so far at 96F this pm. Haven't put air conditioning on all year nor did last summer as am on the shadiest coolest side of a 4-plex. But just 25 air miles or 45 road miles across our 2k>3k coastal mountains on Pacific Shores it is now just 60F with the high only going up to 65F this pm. Trying to motivate myself to drive down there on this holiday and do some smooth stone close-up work but my gut feels unpleasant due to unmentionables. Better quieter idea for tomorrow as there will be a rare -1.0 foot minus tide at 8am and that allows poking around at some strange colorful looking life.

Wife continues to take me on 6-7 mile forced marches (and continues and continues - she's relentless!). I knew this day would come in time: she's now faster and stronger than me, and I'm finding it more and more difficult to just keep up. She complains I 'slow her down'. If my left leg would 'normalize', I think I'd like to go jogging now and again. Haven't done that for some years now. It used to be a real joy for me. Meanwhile, I am slow to very slow. But still, we hike in the neighborhood streets, as I mentioned somewhere else, I think. (I'm doing 'small journaling' again, so sometimes I don't remember if I'm talking to the forum or just to myself. It's very much the same sort of thing. I'm never talking to anyone but myself.) The parks and greenbelts are too crowded with people trying to get out until sometime after sunset. This is yet another effect of the covid19 pandemic: people are so tired of their own houses by now, that getting out for exercise is a big deal. I read somewhere that it's virtually impossible to get a bicycle now because sales have gone up some 600%. So a project to clean up my old Raleigh has been added to my 'todo list'. It's not the greatest bike on earth, but it only weighs about 23 lbs and it fits my longish legs. It's way too 90s to ever be cool these days, however. Anyway, no trips anywhere else so far, but I'm starting to chomp at the bit some. I 'rewired' the guylines on the Scarp 1 yesterday as a diversion, then set it up on the front lawn to test the revised configuration for problems & hitches. Some time ago, I'd redone the guylines so it was more like the Hilleberg Akto. I'd used a variety of nylon rings and keychain rings when I first did the conversion long, long ago - primarily because I couldn't find something more suitable, but I found some half inch welded rings a few years ago, but had never gotten around to switching them out. (I probably saved an ounce of weight, but it's much nicer looking now.) The original Tarptent configuration uses 3 stakes for the ends of the Scarp series. I'm still trying to finalize my plans for the new mailbox, which the wife has been nagging me to do for 5-10 years. The old one rusted out years ago, and the wife never really liked the "oil derrick" style of the thing. I'm trying to make it 'semi-ornate' to keep things interesting, even though the USPS may very well be on its last legs as I type this. So I'm keeping busy, but not going far from home.

Right on cue, it's summer in Michigan. We would normally be up at Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes for the long weekend but, while they just opened for day visitors, their campgrounds are all still closed. We also decided to not join the mad rush "up north" in general. So, it's an outdoor home projects weekend. I'm taking full advantage of the unemployed and bored 21 year-old son.

I rebelled and went on a road trip. Pawnee Grasslands on Friday, to Steamboat Springs on Saturday and back home on Sunday. I took all of my own food, slept in the car both nights, just two fuel stops and very few people. BigLoad our moose traveled to Fish Creek Falls, near Steamboat. It was good to see something besides the inside of my condo or my neighborhood.

I took the family for a drive yesterday. We crossed the Hudson on the new Cuomo bridge. Really beautiful views. We continued on to Sloatsburg and got on 7 Lakes Dr. It goes from South to North through Harriman park. It was so crowded. Hundreds of cars parked on the side of the road with almost all having tickets on their windows for illegal parking. There were park police cars, local and state as well. Lots of police. Many of the cross roads in the park were closed. We pulled into the parking lot at Tiorati circle and there was one spot left. This was around 4pm. I think they had just opened the lot again after closing it for overcrowding. The twins had to pee. We had our own portable potty with us. We were trying to go to Anthony Wayne Recreation lot since it is really big and we might be able to do a little biking there. Turns out it is being used as a giant tent city for a drive in COVID test center. So no go.
We all could feel the effects of the trip. Evidently we are out of shape for sensory stimulation. So much time just at the house and walking around the neighborhood did that.

Would like to publicly say that at times today felt a bit guilty because while I'm here having a fine and often fun or interesting time, always relatively safe, and can celebrate more broadly those humans that have gone before us sacrificing, and note am a GI myself, there are people out there in our county, our state, our nation, our planet that are dearly fighting for their lives with every strained painful breath of life that is terrifyingly slipping away. And further there are all the truly essential workers out there that have not had it so easy, and some have also paid the ultimate cost that I a human being greatly says thank you and be safe on this memorializing day of heroes.
