Not many masks here in Jackson either. I'm staying out of the bar for a while.

The first weekend the Delaware Water Gap reopened, there was fire at one of the trail junctions on the AT. It seems like stupidity was just dying to relaunch itself on the world.

Significant numbers of people in this era will not obey policies they personally have issues with unless they feel pain, suffer fines, social criticism, or something they want is threatened to be taken away. A prime reason we have so much trash left in these areas as almostthere noted is there has been little enforcement both in our parks and also our urban areas over the last 4 decades. Also a key reason there are so many now setting up their campsites way too close to lakes and making campfires in timberline areas above policy elevation limits. Social distancing will be likewise ignored unless we threaten to give people pain.
In parks that is easily done by announcing any areas found to have people not practicing social distancing will say be shut down for a week. That doesn't mean if just one or two groups do so because there will predictably be a few that will do just the opposite for political or society hating reasons. Once that becomes well known, some visitors themselves will apply peer pressure against those they see there that threaten access at such popular icon destinations.

No, I'm picking up more trash in two weeks than previously seen in two months - this is an adopted trail. And it's not unusual, all across California similar reports from other trail volunteers. Increases in trash everywhere. The rangers and the sheriff ARE out there. I think it's people who would have normally gone to the movies or malls looking for something to do.
The national parks in California will open when the governor takes us to Phase 3. And Yosemite will be requiring park passes in advance -- day users will need to go online to get a pass, in advance, show it at the gate on the way in instead of purchasing it there. Cars in the valley will be radically reduced this way. Folks with lodging reservations get to come in with that reservation. No word on whether wilderness permits are considered lodging reservations. That's the tentative plan. SEKI will be virtually issuing wilderness permits so I assume Yosemite will as well. No idea what will happen to bear can rentals...
Meanwhile Sierra National Forest, one of those without online reservations, continues to do mail in reservations, and walk ins are gotten by phone - put in the night box. We're going this weekend to check out the status of one of our trails. Most of the forest is still closed by snow, not the virus. Kaiser Pass is scheduled for 5/30 opening.

Brad,
I know lots of people love it but I've only been to the local a couple of times; like many locals the family squabble kind of upset me after what they did to the beloved Cadillac Grille that was there. With COVID-19 I'm gonna try to not walk in front of the Cowboy or anywhere in the square for some time yet.

Lassen Volcanic is still closed with no plans yet on what they are going to do (nothing on the web page, anyway). But it is a lesser visited Park, and the majority of the visitors stick to the main Park road. The Butte, Juniper, and Warner Valley entrances combined get only a fraction of the main park road traffic. One of the advantages of unpaved roads. No one wants gravel dings on their Prius. That will leave the backcountry even less used and give me even more solitude.

Yes, this year more than most National Forest OHV areas are going to be a godsend.
I’m thinking Fishlake and Dixie in Utah for a nice fall Aspen visit.

STOUT mixed drinks, and Melvin IPA on Tap! It's crazy how many bars can't get a shaken Martini right.

I have to laugh. From inside the car, it felt like we were driving up and down arroyos, if not vast canyons. Then I got out to take a photo :D This doesn't capture the big dent on the other side from getting too close to a rock.

I live less than an hour from Shenandoah NP in Virginia. They finally opened Memorial day weekend. I learned a long time ago, If i want to go up for a bit of solitude, get there at 6:00 AM or so and leave before noon. So I drove up on Monday for a very short hike to test out some new photo gear. There's a rock outcrop with a terrific view not far from the drive. Not real popular so it was my first choice. It was nice. Fog rolling in and out. Took a ton of pictures, some time lapses of the fog, then decided to head out about 1:00. That place was PACKED by then. Every major trailhead was jammed with cars. I drove through one of the waysides to just see what was open, and found lines of 50 people or more, all waiting for the restrooms. I didn't see a single mask on anyone out there. Social disancing?? Everyone jammed together just like any warm summer day.
The second surge of this virus is going to be bad. And they'll all blame somebody else for it..............
