I was looking for the most convenient blades for my next camping adventure and I was reading this article Guide to the Best Axes and Hatchets thinking to buy Estwing Special Edition E45ASE 26″ Camper’s Ax because the special edition label really attracts me. Has anyone own and recommend it?
thinking to buy Estwing Special Edition E45ASE 26″ Camper’s Ax
I have an Estwing 3/4 axe that I have had for over 35 years. I used to carry it backpacking in my early 20's until I learned better. Now a fire when even car camping is just a smoky mess that has the risk of setting the woods on fire while sending biomass up in smoke out of its native habitat.
jalexa , you don't specify what you want this ax for, so it's hard for us to provide any guidance. That said, there are probably very few members of this forum who can advise you on this one (I know I can't), since this is not backpacking gear. You might look for a bushcraft forum, and pose the question there.
I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. -Soren Kierkegaard
I actually carried a 30" bow saw and the 3/4 axe. The saw to cut off the ground dead branches free then I dragged them to camp. Once there more sawing to bring them down to lengths so I could split them with the axe. The sawdust made an good fire starter. Usually made for beautiful fires.
Besides the danger of setting the woods on fire there was always the issue of a dangerously bloody wound out in the middle of the woods. Oh and trudging around the underbrush gathering firewood is a great way to collect ticks. Good times.
