Sad...that there hasn't been a post here on "Mountain States" in a month. I thought this was a backpackers' blog.

The mountains are closed......seriously, many counties have banned travel on county roads to everyone but residents. You can't get to most trailheads.

For many of us, there has been a Stay at Home order for over a month. Any new discussions seem to be about Gear, thus over in the Gear section. Still, plans are being made for trips into the mts.

Well, we are free of snow here in Gunnison, but there is plenty in the mountains. On my birthday at the end of May, I am planning to do a traverse of Whetstone Mountain, near Crested Butte. I did that about 15 years ago. There are 4 summits connected by ridge, with the last being the highest (and toughest) point. I don't see much before then, unless I want to dodge the mountain bikers at Hartman's Rocks.
During May, I'd love to take a day and go hike some of the trails at Mueller State Park. There are over 100 miles of trails, and I believe that one more day over there, and I'll have those done. Does anyone know if that state park (or state parks, in general) is or will be open?

I did that about 15 years ago. That'll be a great birthday party! I did Whetstone in 1981. It was a great hike. I came down by the little lake on the north side of the mountain. I could hear the water flowing under the boulders just above it along with eerie semi-echoes when I made noise myself. Worked my way down through some thick and steep aspen groves then hitched a ride back to town. There are 4 summits connected by ridge, with the last being the highest (and toughest) point. That depends on which way you go up, of course! I went up from the northwest; just walked out of town a mile or so then headed up through the trees (not sure whose property I trespassed). Didn't bother doing the other three peaks. Maybe someday.

I am actually going up from the south (Gunnison) side that worked for me before. I'll go up until the private property line on Carbon Creek, and then turn east up the side gully, which will top out between Whetstone and Red Mountain. Then, I'll turn left and go up those 4 summits from east to west, saving the highest for last. My descent will be to the saddle between Whetstone and Axtell, and then south to the property line and fence, which I'll have to go around to get back to my vehicle.
If anyone wants to join, it will be near the end of May. And there will be plenty of room up there to socially distance!

I'm glad to know the legal way to do it, in case I ever get back for a reunion. I'll watch here for pictures!
ETA: I almost died on Mt Axtell that same summer. Closest I ever cuddled with lightning.

It looks like limited lodging in Grand Teton will open June 8 and in Yellowstone June 15. I went to slide Lake Tuesday, it was AWESOME!

17 weeks before I return to Wyoming. Just hope air travel will be safe (and even available)! Happy to hear Colter Bay was open. Assume Signal Mtn will be too. Social distancing while hiking and backpacking is fairly easy. Airports, supply stores and campground facilities...another matter. It's a new world. I'm leading a group of about 15 out of Pinedale early September. So far, everything is a go, but we aren't going to be doing any group photos or likely dining in restaurants.

Maybe you can get take-out burgers from Wind River Brewing Co. And take-out breakfast from Heart and Soul. (They don't open until 7:00, though)

Good ideas! I'll see if the motel will let us set up chairs instead of using the picnic tables. They might even have a tarp or 2 in case of rain.
Heart and Soul has great omelettes! Maybe for the 2 acclimation day hikes but not the backpack. We have a long first day. Hope the Wrangler will have early full breakfast takeout. I'm happy with oatmeal/bagel...grab coffee at Obo's and go.

The Beartooth Highway (MT/WY) will open on schedule this weekend if it doesn’t snow too much. But snow is definitely in the forecast.
